This, of course, is the talk that I thought of while chatting with folks at PyBay about how I haven't had any good talk ideas lately, literally the day after the PyCascades CfP closed and a week after the PyLadiesCon CfP closed. 🤦♀️🫠

If only the dried up husk of Netscape still knew how to make a good web browser without fucking it all up chasing AI garbage…

It's a bit of a shame that PEP 713 was rejected. […] Sadly, here we are. PEP 713 was thrown out the window and then run over by a bus.

@jsnell 👋 on Upgrade+ episode #535 you talked about permanent holiday lights, and mentioned a reddit post and google sheet comparing a bunch of different options. Can you share a link to that post? I'm interested in what options are out there beyond Everlight, but haven't found a good comparison.
Thank you!

I've gotta say: there's something really satisfying about having PC/PS5 games just be another app window on my Mac, rather than having to switch inputs every time I want to play a game.

Well, I'm slowly figuring out monitor shenanigans.
It turns out that with the open source apps Sunshine [1] and Moonlight [2], I can stream a really nice 4K HDR picture, with almost zero latency, from my gaming PC to my Mac over CAT6 LAN.
I can also stream HDR from my PS5 to my Mac using the PS Remote Play app, though the quality/latency doesn’t feel quite as nice.
And I found the Sabrent Thunderbolt 4 KVM switch [3], so I can switch an Apple thunderbolt monitor between my personal Mac Mini and my work Mac Studio.
The only missing piece is my Switch, but I can always play that handheld (rip 1080p) …
… which means the road blocks to adopting an (expensive) Apple display in my life have mostly vanished. 🤪

I’d be prepared to buy an entire Mac Mini to get this case 😅

Welp, the Asus “pro art” 5K display is the worst example of poor “local dimming” zones I have ever encountered in a monitor, and I’m not even looking at deep blacks. Just watch as my background terminal magically flickers in brightness the full height of the display when I scroll a bright yellow photo of my car in front. Absolutely bananas that anything like this would ever get the “pro” label attached. 🤪
I literally can’t live with this, so I guess the monitor hunt continues. I’m gonna end up dropping an absurd amount of money on an apple display and external switches and kit, aren’t I? 🫠

The Asus 27” 5K monitor finally came into stock this morning. I’ve been looking at this for months now, as it’s the only 5K+ monitor on the market with multiple inputs, HDR (barely), anti-glare, good color coverage, no “smart” features, and doesn’t look like trash (I’m looking at you Dell 6K). It costing half of the price of the Samsung S9 doesn’t hurt, but I’m also worried because the reviews of that one were disappointing…
I’m desperately hoping that at least it’s not as bad as the infamous LG 5K ultra “fine” display. 😅🤞
Just gotta figure out what I’m going to do since three inputs is still one less than the number of devices on my desk that I regularly use with my monitor. Even more switches and cables I guess 🫠
