Kloster is quite a prize. A booby prize, that is. Of course he had a restraining order for domestic violence. It appears to be a requirement for this administration.

Moving and illuminating remembrance of Marianne Faithfull. I didn't know this! "Her great-great uncle was Leopold van Sacher-Masoch, the kink pioneer who wrote Venus in Furs."

The pinnacle/nadir of Hofstadter's Anti-Intellectualism in American Life. I know distraction is the pt. but this distracted me. MSM, interview these kids!

"Wired reported this week that leadership @ #Trump's Office of Personnel Management, which controls employment for the whole federal bureaucracy, now includes a 21-year-old intern of tech billionaire Peter Thiel & a #Musk intern who graduated high school in May. Yes, that would mean he's still a literal teenager."

Hell no. #Antisemitism 101: Acc. to #Trump's EO, federal authorities are now charged w/identifying all civil & criminal actions w/in their respective jurisdictions that "might be used to curb or combat anti-Semitism." This includes working w/university administrators to monitor activities "by alien students & staff" &, "if warranted," taking action "to remove such aliens."

"In a public FB post, the group called on volunteers to watch over Home Depot parking lots for ICE/Border Patrol agents. A flyer from the group read, 'We need support with ICE/Border Patrol watch shifts, [and] you will be trained.'"

For those of us around Pasadena, is there a group (like the one in Pomona mentioned here) that will train us? There is a Home Depot close by and if ICE is targeting Home Depots, I'd like to go & cause some good trouble, as John Lewis said.

Queen Maggie Hassan. Wow! Not only did she speak so movingly about her son, but man, did she tear apart #RFK. He knows squat about Medicare and Medicaid. You love to see it and only hope and pray that it makes a difference. https://www.dailykos.com/story/2025/1/30/2300232/-Watch-this-Democrat-obliterate-RFK-Jr-during-Senate-hearing?pm_campaign=blog&pm_medium=rss&pm_source=&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

Song for today. what's yours @TonyStark? This invitation is, of course, for everyone!

I'm tense and nervous and I can't relax

I can't sleep 'cause my bed's on fire

Don't touch me, I'm a real live wire"

[#]Whitman singing.

Have you ever loved the body of a woman?/Have you ever loved the body of a man?/Do you not see that these are exactly the same to all in all nations/and times all over the earth?

. . . .

Have you seen the fool that corrupted his/ own live body? or the fool/that corrupted her own live body?/ For they do not conceal themselves, and cannot /conceal themselves.

Dylan Thomas's words, though about individual death, seem applicable to our nation right now. His admonition to rage (and protest and sue and fight with all of our might) against what we is happening also seems right.

"Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

[#]SethRogen and #LaurenMillerRogen have made a documentary about and in honor of Lauren's mother, who died of early-onset #Alzheimer's. There will be 2 screenings tomorrow, January 29. One at 2 pm and 5 pm. I will be at the first one sharing my thoughts about the film (which I haven't yet seen). If you are in the Redondo Beach area and can come to the Kensington senior community, please do. The work they have done for #caregivers through their foundation, #HFC (Hilarity for Charity) is essential.

oy gevalt, google Chris Butler. According to the Science of Identity website "Jagad Guru appeared in this world in 1948 as Chris Butler." #Gabbard, god forbid she -- not even a Manchurian Candidate because she doesn't even try to her closeness to #Putin (and #Assad) gets confirmed, and #Hegseth might have some interesting, hilarious religious discussions that might lead, I'm afraid to Hegseth acting upon his warrior ethos.

Wanting to mourn/needing to resist:

"Political grief . . . reflects the feeling that your worldview or political beliefs — what we think is right vs. wrong, or morally valid — is under attack." An individual "may be mourning potential losses of [their] own rights and economic stability, as well as worried about the impact it might have on reproductive rights and public health."

Mark Koplik is the assistant director who sent the email that misrepresented the reason Gawad withdrew from the panel. A person gets to do that and a panel is not canceled because of it. There was to be a third writer on the panel -- Emily Layden. Gawad has since lost her writer-in-residence position at the Wilton Library. I hope they reconsider. Between Two Moons is my next read.

Opening lines of Allen Ginsberg "America" (1956)

"America I've given you all and now I'm nothing.

America two dollars and twentyseven cents January

17, 1956.

I can't stand my own mind.

America when will we end the human war?

Go fuck yourself with your atom bomb.

I don't feel good don't bother me."

Last, I am profoundly aware of my lack of expertise in the incredibly complicated area of neurology. If anyone out there (#neurologists?) would like to correct me (especially on my reference to the tau hypothesis), I am all ears and always eager to learn more (and to make sure I'm not spreading misinformation). I should say that maybe the book will go more deeply into the amyloid v. tau hypotheses.

Third, this is wrong. "Recently, alternatives to the amyloid hypothesis have begun to find support. Promising approaches include exploring the role of viruses in cognitive decline, treating brain infections and reducing brain inflammation — potentially with GLP-1 drugs that have transformed weight loss." The amyloid hypothesis has been challenged by researchers who focus on the presence of tau in the brain. Tau has been part of the conversation since 1986.

Some thoughts from an English professor who studied neurology at UCSF for a year (dangerous, I know!) on this #NYT piece on #Alzheimer's and research fraud. https://archive.ph/Aj93P#selection-1119.175-1123.207. First, I am very much looking forward to reading the book.

Second, a small one, the author should have mentioned Theo Baker as the "intrepid reporter" who was instrumental in breaking the Mark Tessier-Lavigne misconduct which led to his resignation as Stanford president. (more to follow)
