I pushed the repository for the oscilloscope emulation source code (video plug-in for the #VapourSynth and #AviSynth engines):

https://gitlab.com/EleonoreMizo/faveworm

I’ll do a proper release with compiled library, doc, etc. later.

This is now much better. The autocorrelation efficiently locks the waveform even with a complex harmonic content combined with a weak fundamental. Not perfect, but good enough.

Here, the scope shows 20 ms of audio per beam sweep. The video is 30 fps, or 33 ms per frame, therefore there is one and a half sweep per frame at best, generally less (open shutter time is 100%). This causes a bit of shimmering, especially on stable signals. This is the same kind of artefact appearing when filming a CRT display in the real life! Anyway I see several ways to mitigate this.

Playing with video rendering code emulating an analogue oscilloscope, implemented as a plug-in for #VapourSynth and #AviSynth.

It looks decent, but I think I need some autocorrelation stuff to properly lock the waveform.

It looks like the problem was just some dried solder joints around the voltage amplifier IC, as poking the pins with the meter probe suddenly disengaged the speaker proctection. The STK3062 is known to run very hot despite the heatsink, so maybe it accelerated the joint aging. I reworked the joints but I need more tests to confirm everything is O.K. now.

Repairing a 35-yo #Marantz PM-55 amplifier. I wish all electronic devices were as easy to service. There is a removable plate on the bottom of the enclosure for direct access to the track side of the main PCB. This is a nice addition, probably increasing manufacturing costs but making my life much easier.

The service manual is detailed with expected idle voltages at almost any point of the circuit. There was a numbering error on the schematics on the automute IC pins but this is a minor detail.

The audio graph screen in #PédaleVite now offers editing capabilities! Creating or changing programs becomes way smoother.

First draft of a graph visualization screen for the #FX programs in #PédaleVite.

White: audio (red/blue for stereo),

Green: control signals.

Nothing really fancy here but now it’s much easier to figure out the signal flow in a program.

The zero-effort auto-layout is not that bad, but sometimes it hides forward connections with aligned nodes also complex patches become messy so I’ll have to implement a better algorithm.

I should add navigation/editing capabilities too, and maybe replace the plain squares with icons.

🎸 🎛️ New effect for #PédaleVite, a Phase Modulation distortion.

The input sound modulates itself using phase modulation, same kind of process as the Yamaha DX7 “FM” synthesis. And like the FM operators, it’s possible to feedback-modulate.

It sounds yummy, especially on a #bass! The effect adds harmonics but no gain, so adding a light overdrive makes it really shine.

But yeah, I have to admit that the look and feel is neither modern, neither skeuomorphic. It looks more like an ancient MS-DOS spreadsheet…

I also added interfaces for various features that were implemented from the beginning but without editing capability (I had to hack the configuration file to use them).

First is unit selection for time/frequency parameters, so you can have you feedback delay time or flanger rate displayed and edited in notes (F#3…) Or LFO frequencies displayed in beats: it syncs to the current tempo, adjustable by tapping a footswitch.

Second is notch list: make the parameter snap to user-editable values when it comes close to them.

Also added a graph plot of the modulation curves (now it needs labels for clarity). Etc.

I spent the last few days improving the #PédaleVite user interface. I finally made a page to review all the modulations in the current program, just in a single glance. Colored badges show basic information (non-linear curves, source range clipping/remapping, notches…). Modulation amounts are modifiable from this page. It’s possible to jump to the modulation source detail page and come back. Very handy! I wish I had that at the time I created the patch below (covering almost 2 pages…)

But I have no idea why I’m doing this, really. I shouldn’t encourage processing of 64-bit audio, this is a pure waste of power.

I’m adding float64 Neon support to my HIIR oversampling library. Nice performance improvement, as expected. The functions are matching half the speed of their float32 counterparts.

Picture: performance test on a #RaspberryPi5, 64-bit RPi OS, compiled with Clang 18.

The *NeonOld functions seem now slower than regular *Neon for any number of coefficients, I’ll probably remove them if this is caused by a compiler improvement and not just by a more sophisticated CPU architecture compared to Pi3 or Pi4.

[EDIT: it’s related to hardware so I'll keep them]

I just released a collection of #audio input and output modules for easy interfacing between #effect or #synth boards and the outside world (XLR and jack connectors). They are input buffers (for balanced line and hi-Z instrument such as electric guitar) and balanced line drivers.

Each board is made of 4 I/O units with a 25 mm pitch, sharing a symmetric power bus and can be cut at the desired length with a saw. Multiple boards can be daisy-chained.

Includes Gerber files for PCB manufacturing and #KiCAD source.

I may add more connectors or signal formats later, feel free to ask!
