The world will let it happen. I have no optimism here. My fellow countrymen at least, have let ourselves think of that particular entire ethnicity the same way our 17th, 18th, and 19th century predecessors on this continent thought, and in many ways still do, think about our indigenous populations.

I didn’t want to be right but apparently I was. The real estate grab for Mediterranean-fronting property has begun, openly articulated by my own country’s President. He even casually suggested ethnically cleansing the area, post-genocide, in order to accomplish it more easily. And offered us up to lead and organize it! Of course there’s no talk about compensating any of the thousands of homeowners and businesses owners for their property as they are force marched out of their country entirely.

So close! I’m almost done warping this loom for a sample weave. This short muga silk warp has been a bear to thread in this draft but hopefully it’ll be worth it? #handweaver #handweaving #8shaftloom @weaving

[#]3GoodThings

I found someone’s phone and returned it to them, making them remark that there were honest people in this world.

I learned how to twine a small basket, just like in the Mesolithic, and can’t wait to make one.

There is a happy cat curled up in my lap.

For those feeling dismal about the new U.S. administration's flurry of EOs, a reminder:

U.S. Presidential EOs are not laws. Only Congress can pass U.S. laws.

EOs are like CEO orders to the Executive branch and will affect you through your interactions with Executive branch departments/employees.

This admin will treat the U.S. as a company, so act like a customer. Grouse to your reps. It's terrible? Say so. Make it clear you're not getting your tax dollars worth from the executive branch.

I don’t need or want to engage with all the people, everywhere, all the time, which is how many tools now operate. Nor do I feel obligated to provide my labor and presence to operations that are antithetical to my best interests. So I’ve tested new tools for connecting with those I enjoy interacting with this way. It’s been a bit of a slog, but I’ve finally found some and have settled in nicely. I’ve stayed socially connected. I’m not tired of that, introvert though I may be.

I just saw a statement somewhere that “we’re all just tired of social media”.

Nope. I’m just tired of certain people. And certain tools are no longer working well for me for whatever reason, be they practical or ethical. But I’m no more tired of connecting or observing socially via my phone or computer than I was tired of letter writing, television, or radio.

I DID IT! I finally got a first warp onto my Glimakra loom, threaded, the shafts tied up and I’ve got a clean shed! I’m so thrilled I can’t express it. Two of my fellow guild members helped mentor me through the process and troubleshoot when everything seemed wonky.

Now, to weave off this blanket!

Without that pervasive right-wing negativity we see today towards… everything… both were not only commercial successes but cultural ones too. Both were deep into American popular culture at the time. We had fun! My mom enjoyed Die Hard for crying out loud. I swear, the right-wing has taken so much of the fun and joy out of average American popular culture in the past decade.

I wish I had hardback slipcovers for my soft back books.

Someone needs to make this a business where I can just order the size, style, and spine lettering and placement. When it arrives, I just slip the front and back covers of the softcover/paperback into the sleeves inside the hardcover and voila! A whole library of hardback books.

Been a while since I posted weaving, spinning, and dyeing related stuff, so here's an update:

I won 1st place (audience favorite) in my guild's contest for dyeing some yarn green with natural dyes. This was a small skein I created after picking apart an old blue wool sweater (from Goodwill) that I then dyed with mushoorms (Phaeolus schweinitzii or Dyers polypore). Voila, a lovely, complex and variegated green on recycled yarn.

Reading through this and feeling all the things through the weight of history. For everyone who says “I don’t recognize my country today”, there are those still living whose parents most definitely would.

“The viciousness of segregation didn’t stop at the store. As he says, local postmasters would often refuse to sell stamps or money orders to black customers… Storekeepers burned the catalogs…”

Spent last weekend in Seattle for a fabulous workshop with Julie Beeler (author of the Mushroom Color Atlas) at Botanical Colors. Book event, chef created mushroom dinner, foraging, and then dyeing wool and silk and creating watercolor paints and ink. Joyous, creative, inspiring.

Hey folks, I'm backing a film project on Kickstarter that's an "all or nothing" type and they are a mere $3500 away from their goal with just days to go. Would any of you out there please consider dropping a few dollars on this, I consider very worthy, documentary? Watch their video, read the posts and check out the Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/taxidriverdoc) for more information.

Deleted my NaNoWroMo account today. I support writers use of any tool they wish to accomplish the goal of getting human thought into shareable prose and AI tools will be helpful to many. But dismissing - unironically - ongoing concerns about data sets (that will soon be a billion dollar industry) using the uncompensated work of others without their consent as “classist” and “ableist” without recognizing echos of colonialism’s complicated siphoning of resources rubbed a raw nerve for me. Done.
