I'm entirely baffled by evaluators continuing to promote the embrace of generative AI. They almost universally dismiss deep ethical and practical concerns with a hand wave and/or a shrug.

When it comes to my profession, I'll remember 2024 as the year that I lost respect for many of my colleagues and professional organizations. I hope 2025 will be the year they wake up and change course.

I was told of an IUI professor today saying - publicly as part of a presentation - that he tells his students to use generative AI to analyze qualitative data. (!!) Especially if you're a "creative" because hey, you can even use a model that takes a more creative approach to analysis (whatever the hell that is).

Clearly, he has no business presenting or teaching about evaluation or data analysis.

I went from feeling a little excited that I was being invited personally (I need the work) to the very familiar feeling of nah, it's someone messing with me and the organization generally. Cool. :yell:

Just received the most niche phishing attempt I've ever heard of, certainly the most specific.

An RFQ for evaluation (!) from an art museum (!!) that I know and respect (!!!), from an actual contact from a conference (!!!!), used their email signature and email (!!!!!)

The kicker: it had the same ridiculous AF due date (7 days from the email) typical in actual RFQs.

After examining link + where it went in a sandbox, I told the org and they acted.

I sincerely do not know how to relate and be in relationship with my neighbors here in Indiana if so many vote to support hate and out of fear.

I do know that I'm not backing down, though.

That's all I have to say right now.

Thank your poll workers, y'all. Maybe a few times even. They're your neighbors in ways that matter beyond geography. It's serious work done by all kinds of people that truly care about democracy.

From Association of Children's Museums:

TOMORROW is the last day to apply for Nurturing Numeracy Skills & Math Literacy in Children's Museums-- a cohort to develop and evaluate ideas, strategies, activities, and resources to nurture and increase math literacy in children and grow math confidence in parents and caregivers.

Smaller children’s museums w/ annual operating budgets of less than $1 million are invited and encouraged to apply.

LB: This is what the Internet is for. Not a true/serious fan of Green Day, but their music and craft translates well to this genius idea. For example, the Teddy Ruxspin track example is a bit cursed, but wow, it just makes sense.

Thanks for nothing, generative AI companies and their hype people. You've destroyed a tool that's actually important for NLP research and evaluation. Many packages in python and R depend on wordfreq, and this is probably the way things will be.

Volunteer maintainers will increasingly just say, nah it's not worth it or even possible to sort through the AI vomit.

Thanks to Peter Linett and Slover Linett at NORC for this solid research re: DEAI and leadership in US museums - seems to be some really useful points made in the report! Of course, I have two follow-up questions (and more, but I'll let them go right now).

https://www.aam-us.org/2024/04/23/2024-museum-board-leadership-a-national-report/

(you can fill in garbage info and still download the report, btw. Or request it from the authors or me.)

I'm not affiliated in any way with Arts Midwest. This looks like a solid program that serves 9 states in the US Midwest.

<<

Arts Midwest is now accepting applications for Cultural Sustainability: Equity-Based Operating Grants, a pilot program that offers grants of up to $67,000 to uplift small arts and culture organizations that are rooted in communities of color.

Intro webinar: Sept 19 2p ET

Due: Oct15

Well, the AISL NSF grant I was on for evaluation of a STEM maker research project was rejected. Which is quite depressing.

At least the reviewers said that my part of the proposal was innovative, exactly how evaluation should be conducted, thorough, and a bunch of other great descriptions.

Maybe next year?

LB: tell me again about "ethical AI" /s

I'm so tired of hearing about this non-existent idea borne of greed, hype, and venture capital. It has become a telling signal (like other issues) - if you use it, I want nothing to do with your work, and I don't trust you with any equity or ethical issue.

I'd much rather focus on the equity issues we were making incremental progress on as nonprofit and evaluation fields - can we get back to that?

Since AEA isn't approving my comment which (professionally even!) called the post into question, I'll be blunt.

Everything in the post below shows

a) the authors have terrible evaluative thinking and practice

and

b) have almost no clue what "AI" is/does/means.

Just clowns, all the way down.

I now have four honeybee colonies. Sort of accidentally (?) by doing a better job than I expected. I'm as surprised as anyone!

We'll see how they do as far as buildup and health...but that's a lot of work. I normally just have two, and it's serious and sweaty work in the summer and fall.

Any other Indiana beekeepers or experts here? Any idea if this hot spell is going to cause a nectar and pollen shortage in the next month?

I'm letting go of the work/project search for now. I'm tired of abuse and extraction, tried of terrible practice being rewarded. I haven't seen much in the nonprofit world in the last year that wants to fairly compensate me for my labor and expertise. It's been deeply discouraging.

If you're doing work that matters in a way that also matters and you need an evaluator or researcher (hint: you probably do), please contact me.
