'Hold Me' (1982) holds a special place in my heart because A) I always liked it and B) it was the first Fleetwood Mac single released after I'd gotten a proper stereo in my room and I wasn't just listening to whatever was playing around me.

Christine McVie came up in conversation this evening, and -- just in case you never realized quite what a songwriting powerhouse she was even in Fleetwood Mac's context of songwriting powerhouses -- I present this annotated track listing.

She was a total badass.

People who aren’t bigots never have to explain how they aren’t bigots. People who don’t sieg heil never have to explain how that was only an awkward gesture.

It’ll be cute when they still say the Jan 6 rioters were antifa if that’s more convenient for their narrative.

The heart is heavy on this last night, one fears, of American democracy. Feels rather like we’re on the deck of the Titanic and it’s starting to tilt.

Oh! And meant to say last night. But an added bonus at Nora’s is in this bill for pre-dinner drinks. Easily the best value anywhere I go. Basically two for the price of one.

It’s just wild that they have scriptures positively littered with verses that explicitly warn against the deceptive powers of the wicked—without ever considering THEY might be deceived.

All those years I rolled my eyes at fundamentalist evangelical relatives who believed in the coming of a literal antichrist.

Never suspecting they—themselves—would fulfill their own prophecy by putting in the White House a man who lives and breathes in active defiance of everything Christ taught while masquerading as an angel of light.

Got here early, waiting for friends and a table, and the dude next to me is so jittery I really need him to start drinking his martini.

Very sorry to see Joan Plowright has died. Someone posted this -- in conversation with Maggie Smith and Judi Dench -- when Smith died. Their lack of vanity and professional pragmatism is amusing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VxsyjMv1d8

Mom took me to the hospital when I needed a minor surgery at Christmas. She tilted her head when the nurse checking me in asked my height and I said five-nine.

Afterwards, as we walked to the prep area, Mom said 'I thought you were five-ten.' And I said I'd thought that, too, until my early 20s when a girl laughed at me and said 'You are NOT five-ten.' So, I rounded down to five-nine and no one has disputed my stated height since.

Anyway, Mom's still laughing at how I arrived at this figure.

Do you suppose the Popeyes that’s been in my trunk for a week—purchased on a whim during errands and promptly forgotten—is still good?

My sister just sent this -- a tour of the Palisades before the fire. The first neighborhood they drive through is completely gone. The second hit very hard. Also a bustling village.

It's a kind of random route that doesn't cover everything and circles back on itself. But it does give a good sense of the way it was just driving around.
