On other Jewish holidays we recommit to our relationship with nature, make amends with our fellows, reckon with our promises and our deeds. But on Chanukah we retell the stories that we took on a violent and corrupt regime and restored justice and freedoms for ourselves and others. I celebrate #Chanukah for its 2191 year old struggle for religious freedom and our people's long fight against despots and tyrants.

We teach children that long ago and far away we resisted occupiers. We fought to pray, to speak, to eat and live as our people chose, not as the Seleucid governor dictated. Families died to keep kosher. Families took up arms and invented guerilla tactics that defeated local remnants of Alexander the Great's empire. #Maccabees #humanrights #civilrights

💨 Smoke Sensors, please

We smell smoke where I live, near the Bellingham Costco. We can't tell if it's a fireplace, a campfire, a car fire, a wildfire, or our apartments are on fire. When we lived on the south side, there were air quality sensors every block or so. But now that we're northsiders, we live in a sensor desert. The nearest sensor is far away from us.

So, will your #EV or hybrid car still work if your automaker discontinues support? Kills the services and APIs and updates that keep it running? Keep it charging? Keep it safe? Keep it legal?

[#]RightToRepair must extend to #cars, for a start. But all the rest of your vehicle that lives in code, networks, clouds must be in escrow. So if the company fails or fails to keep up, car owners can take over.

Otherwise the green benefits die with the car.

While I'm pleased this standard is finished for now (IEEE 2933-2024) and glad to have contributed to the #identity bits, I'm sad that it's a closed standard, only available for purchase, with IP locked down. This is the default for #IEEE Standards Association workproduct. As a contributor it means that while I can point to this catalog page, I cannot point to the work itself or share it or fork it. So different from open standards. I'm unlikely to do that again.
