I made a small change to my list of academic profile links at https://fietkau.science/publications earlier this month. Kicked out some Elsevier stuff in favor of OpenAlex. Their profile of me was already pretty good, all I had to do was let them know that Julian Fietkau from TU Berlin is someone else.
If you'd like to see me through the lens of the academic system, https://fietkau.science is hopefully your best bet, but any of these places will offer some usable slice of the picture.

The other day when @misnina posted about the game we made together for @fedi_jam last September, it reminded me that I never revealed any of its secret easter eggs. ๐ฎ
So if you were going to play โUp in the Airโ but the feather wasn't customizable enough yet, try typing โtransrightsโ on your keyboard while at the tite screen. ๐คซ
The browser game is playable at https://fietkau.media/up_in_the_air or https://jfietkau.itch.io/up-in-the-air ๐

The last "big" code thing I need to get done before the alpha test of my current @fedify project is the task queue - make sure routine data updates happen, consider individual importance and urgency, respect external API rate limits, etc.
But that's super intimidating so I'm currently procrastinating by making it a cute lil home page instead. ๐

It's past midnight where I am. Happy new year! ๐
I've spent Christmas with my close family and have returned well-fed and well-rested.
My last research funding application got denied (we will retry), but the new year still looks busy as ever. I have locked in two opportunities to teach my second and third full university course.
I'm using the rest of this vacation week to work on a Fediverse project โ my biggest one so far.

A few weeks ago, @informatik asked the German-speaking computer science community how they got started with computers. I replied about my first-ever (non-trivial) program, a small game written in Turbo Pascal.
My response, along with a number of others, made it into issue 8 of the โ.infโ magazine: https://inf.gi.de/08/bits-bytes-beginnings#c104699
Cheers and I hope everyone enjoys the reminiscence! ๐

I've been running @thunderbird on a current @gnome desktop and for months now I've been annoyed by a separate launcher icon labeled โthunderbird-esrโ next to the normal Thunderbird one. I checked around again for whether a solution had been posted anywhere by now, and sure enough, it's a one-line fix: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1925766
Thank you, โattilaโ on Bugzilla! My Thunderbird icon knows about its open windows again. ๐

I have added my concept for how to implement starter packs in today's AP-verse, extending @dansup's spec proposal: https://github.com/pixelfed/starter-kits/issues/1#issuecomment-2480729430
If you have thoughts on how starter packs should be structured, come chime in. The details require some ActivityPub knowledge, but I also brought UI mockups.
I see musings and discussion on how to build this as loose conversation threads in many places around here. Shall we try to consolidate around Dan's initial proposal? Please help point people there.

Last night one of my PC monitors broke, and the remaining one is showing some uncanny intermittent flickering. So that's a pretty bad distraction from most things I could be doing this week. ๐
But I'm using the opportunity to make some overdue changes to my home PC setup. May dive into 144Hz territory finally, if this all goes well. Do dedicated Intel A770 cards play well with Wayland?

Excerpt from an email I got this weekend.
On the one hand I like that people are looking out for pitfalls, but it's also a shame that such a simple technology as QR codes is so rife with scams and exploitative products that caution is necessary.

I am publishing a small #ActivityPub / #fediverse project: https://fietkau.software/webfinger_canary and @canary ๐
It is a tiny bot showcasing a split-domain WebFinger setup, where the handle domain is different from the ActivityPub server domain. This is supported by Mastodon and some other ActivityPub implementations, but not all of them.
So this project, aimed at devs and power users, is part test case, part feature recommendation/advocacy. The bot's website at https://correct.webfinger-canary.fietkau.software/ has all the details.

The little #FediJam browser game I directed and coded, โUp in the Airโ, has just been updated to version 1.0. It's playable in these two places:
:fietkau_media: https://fietkau.media/up_in_the_air
๐ https://jfietkau.itch.io/up-in-the-air
Compared to the game jam version from last month, there have been some UI and convenience updates, there is an optional HUD, and a bunch of little easter eggs and cheat codes are included. ๐ And I'm ready to consider this project finished. That was fun! ๐

โBut Julian, didn't this delay your other web dev projects? I'm still waiting for-โ Shhh. Shhhhhhhhh. ๐คซ Just don't think about it. A hobbyist web developer can hyperfocus on making a game for a few weeks once per decade or so, as a treat. ๐ญ

I finished the #FediJam game yesterday that I've been working on with @misnina and @randulo. ๐ I'm very happy with how that came together. You can play it on my website at :fietkau_media: https://fietkau.media/up_in_the_air or on itch.io: https://jfietkau.itch.io/up-in-the-air
Congrats to the creators of the other 21 (!) submissions for finishing their games on time, and to the @fedi_jam team for putting such a nice event together. ๐ Now I'm looking forward to trying (and rating) the games...

Hey so, anyone want to help playtest my #FediJam browser game? ๐
It's a casual dexterity-based game about steering a feather through the clouds. A playthrough takes about five minutes.
I'm especially interested in non-Firefox, non-Linux testers. I have had very little time for cross-browser checks. Bug reports in the next ~12h should be fixed before the game jam deadline.

(Please don't share this elsewhere yet. Still setting up the places for the final version.)

With #FediJam nearing its deadline, I've been working on customization and accessibility options for my game. ๐
Yes, it's a game jam, and this is one area of many where jam games typically cut quality corners to save dev time. But accessibility has kinda become part of my personal brand, so I don't want to skimp here.
It's a dexterity game, which won't appeal to everyone. But the goal is that anyone can at least try it.

Today's #FediJam update: pixel graphics by @misnina are in, collectible placement is (probably) finalized. I'm very happy with how this looks now! ๐
1.5 weekends to go before the jam ends, core gameplay and visuals more or less done, lots of auxiliary stuff left: light story content, sound effects, end screen, title screen and menus, options, credits, touch controls, ...
