They're San Francisco based, so they at least have some protection from being based in a blue state, and their primary data centers are in the bay area. But they have backups in the Netherlands and in Egypt.
At one point, the Egyptian backup was a full mirror. I don't know if it still is. I think donating to them directly is probably best, they'll redirect it if it can be more useful elsewhere.

In case it wasn't clear, my reasoning on #tariffs is that they might make perfect sense if you wanted to break all US reliance on the rest of the world and force all supply chains to be entirely within US borders.

I've posted a thread under a CW on some thoughts/fears I can't get out of my head about the goals behind the #coup in the #US.
I'd really value people telling me why my reasoning is off. It would help me a lot.

The thing that is most frying my mind is that I don't want to become the kind of person who concocts massive unevidenced systems, like the authors of DD for the GameStop "investors".

I need help here. I can’t stop seeing this as more logical than that this is just the actions of a bunch of mean, greedy and stupid people.
Please convince me I shouldn’t be worrying that the true agenda here isn’t a three-tier world:
US billionaires
Those who can and will provide labour to US billionaires (unless fantasy #AI can take their place)
The rest of us (completely and probably preferably expendable)

Here’s a plan:
Authoritarian control, including #fascist neighbour-against-neighbour stuff.
Total control of communications and education.
Cripple public sector so US citizens have to rely on #corporations.
Other foreign nations as much as possible, especially close neighbours.
End #ForeignAid.
Break international #SupplyChains to make the US self-sufficient.
Militarise the southern border and build a #nuclear defense shield.

They can buy islands and build bunkers, but what if they want more?
How about:
Turn the US into an isolated fortress.
Let climate change progress unabated and even accelerate it so most of the world has too little time to adapt.
Rely on the death of billions globally to reset the scale of emissions.
Hope that the US can then build a new empire using the resources of a ravaged planet.
How would you go about achieving that?

Assume the following:
We’re dealing with total #sociopaths who assign no value to a life without insane wealth and will do anything to protect theirs.
In their camp, at least some are informed enough to understand the existential threat of #ClimateChange.
They’re smart enough to see that society is not ready to do what it takes to respond to this crisis.
What would the rational response be for someone in that position?

The assumption seems to be that this #coup is just a catalogue of reactionary grudges and a big grift and that the resulting actions (like #tariffs) indicate stupidity and ignorance.
Shouldn't we consider if there is a bigger end game going on?
It looks to me like every single thing this administration is doing makes total (evil) sense as a plan to protect the US #billionaire class through global #climate breakdown.

Pleased to find that #DanOlsen / #FoldingIdeas has released a new video and it's on #dinosaur #fossils ... and creationism and human gullibility.
Not as mind-expanding as his videos on flat-earthism, NFTs, the metaverse or GameStop, but still a fascinating watch that (yet again) shows how deeply all our misinformation-fuelled problems are grounded in human nature and US evangelical hotbeddery.

How exposed is the #InternetArchive to government attack in the US? How much is backed up elsewhere?
Is it still best to contribute financially to archive.org? Or are there other bodies outside the US that need funds to back it up and that may be lower risk?
I could just give to the #BiodiversityHeritageLibrary which is the resource I use most, but that is at the Smithsonian and federal and hence perhaps at more risk than IA.
Suggestions?

"By making this 'about China' we ignore the root of the problem — that the American tech industry is no longer interested in making good software that helps people."

Planning #FAIR packaging of #plant #phenomics #ResearchData - our current focus is on #ROCrate with #JsonLD to describe domain concepts using #MIAPPE, likely #SSN for sensors, #ProvO (or just #ISA) for provenance, public #vocabularies for each partner's measurement types, etc. and lots of image and CSV files.
[#]MachineLearning is a key use for the #data.
Should we also be looking at #Croissant?
If so, does anyone have experience of combining Croissant and RO-Crate?
Any insights welcomed.

A reason for #hope. I was at a UK secondary school in the 70s and remember #RockAgainstRacism leaflets outside the school gates.
The #WhiteRiot documentary is a good reminder how overt #fascism and #racism were in 70s Britain. And the power of grass-root responses.
It's grim to see so much rolled back so fast, but I take some comfort that in my lifetime these right-wing attitudes were defeated, or at least shamed and largely shunned.

I found today that Coles and Woolworths no longer have (tinned) "reduced fat cream" - what I know as "sterilised cream". It's a taste from my childhood that I love. I hope that's not the last I'll get of it. Maybe my grandparents felt the same way as they grew older and it got harder to find pigs' trotters and brawn ...
On the plus side, there seem to be fewer reasons each week to use the local supermarket duopoly. Every product I like or use inevitably disappears from their shelves.

Other than my work laptop and a couple of programs that I've not yet found a way to run under #Linux, I'm now completely off Windows.
In recent years, I've written pretty much every script I need in #Python because it's easy and predictable even on Windows.
Being able to focus on Linux has reminded me how much easier it is to do some things on the command line or in a #Bash script.
Here's a script I made today to downgrade v. 3.0 EPUBs to v. 2.0 for publishing on Tolino.de.

There are only two of David Lynch's films that I have not found myself wanting to revisit. One was his 1984 Dune. I've never read the books, the special effects have dated horribly, and the plot in the final film was opaque to me. I just rewatched it and (having seen the Villeneuve version) at least could see what was going on, but I don't expect to watch it again. The other is The Elephant Man. I found it too sickly and manipulative, but I'm planning to give it another try.

I also admire how Blue Velvet reveals the ambiguity at the heart of Kyle MacLachlan's Jeffrey Beaumont character. He sees himself as a saviour, but his behaviour is driven by his attraction to damage and pain.
The Twin Peaks pilot, season 2 finale and part 8 of the return are three of the greatest TV episodes ever, and many others are none too shabby.
Lynch's use of music was always perfect:

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is for me the purest and most distilled entry in the Twin Peaks universe, powered by the utterly amazing central performance from Sheryl Lee. She shows vulnerability, damage, innocence, corruption, humour and abject terror with the ability to switch seamlessly between all of these within a continuous shot. Lee brings to life the tragedy of Laura's destruction following years of abuse.
And the picture she hangs on the wall is the stuff of nightmares.
