It will be really interesting to see how Trump handles the insurance industry. Their existence and profitability is based on accurately predicting risk -- no room for misinformation and obedience to demagogues.

People are mad at them but they're also a big evil industry -- Trump will be so confused!

I'm an Eagles fan and that that was a great start, but how was the tackle on the opening kickoff not a helmet to helmet foul? Mixon clearly lost muscular control after that direct head shot. I hope he's in the concussion protocol.

Medievalists - has anyone tried a campaign to get people who own illuminations sliced out of books to turn them over, photograph the text and image, and post them with any other known info?

Seems like a lot of fragments of text might be preserved / recovered that way. Museums too.

Suddenly Google Books is not giving me the option to to download an out-of-copyright book -- in this case, MGH Epistolae 4. (Epistolae Karolini Aevi 2), 1892. And the page I'm looking for is "not part of this preview."

Has the Google Books clampdown that I've long feared come to pass? Or is this an MGH thing? Another good reason to always download any books you need, vs. streaming them.

Election thoughts #4 of 3:

The abortion referendums may have backfired. The plan was to boost turnout by women who would naturally vote against Trump.

But it may have made pro-abortion women feel safe in voting for #trump since their reproductive choices were protected by state constitutions. Trump's "leaving it to the states" BS enabled selfish swing state women to throw their red state sisters under the bus.

Economic populism is essential. But the policies are already there. Biden was just shit at telling the story. EG student loan reform, Republicans fought him every step of the way. That's a true and important story -- where was it?

Related to #1, Republicans were not afraid to be repetitive. Dems made good points (eg Harris in the debate that Trump is vulnerable to flattery and payoffs). But they said them once confident that the point was "won." Media even refuted Trump's points from time to time -- once.

Then Trump repeated them 900 times more. Guess whose argument voters remembered?

(EG "Trump was good for the economy")

The New Yorker Hour made the point that Trump had a coherent (albeit false and stupid) story about why the world sucks right now.

Neither Biden nor Harris had any coherent story. I think that rings true.
