I think that the main draw for me is the lack of moral ambiguity and unabashed enthusiasm in the community. No one is arguing about whether the scripting engine is a net negative for humanity or accusing anyone using it of being wrong; no one nitpicks their way into reinventing the wheel; and when someone releases a new thing, it’s either met with applause or, at worse, not a ton of engagement, but there’s never abject disdain. 2/3

While I love working in the tech industry broadly, the most exciting to me in technology recently has been the community around the monome norns. Norns is a small computer made for music; I think it’s an RPi? But unlike a lot of synths, many of which these days are also RPis with fancy hardware controls, the norns embraces being a computer: it has a scripting engine and a very active and engaged community of folks hacking together programs to make fun sounds. 1/3

“Why am I not hearing audio out of the other channel?” he asks, fiddling with the stereo cable that he plugged into a mono synth. 🤦

We as a species really need to put a moratorium on trap beats until we can learn how to use them responsibly.
