Sunset over Lake Superior is so good this time of year. I love winter in northern Minnesota.

I wrote an article about the changes to filming and photography rules in US national parks and on federal lands. These are big changes and will make filming easier for most of us.

Recently the EXPLORE Act passed unanimously in the US Congress, and it's waiting for Biden's signature. It contains a lot of outdoor recreation goodness, especially for adventurers and small filmmakers. I was on the Paddle and Portage Podcast talking about what the EXPLORE Act means to me as a photographer and guide. I'm excited. You can listen at the link.

This is one of my favorite photos from 2024. I was doing a project where I was only shooting a 35 mm prime lens the entire month of March. I really liked the project because I don't often use 35 mm for my landscape photography. Using that prime lens forced me to look at the landscape in slightly a different way, and visually it made the background much more prominent then when using wider angle lenses.

Last week on Lake Superior we had sub-zero degree fahrenheit temperatures that created a lot of really cool sea smoke. It's my favorite time of the year to photograph the big lake. Here's one of the photos that I got out of the sunrise.

This is one of my favorite photos that I took last year. I took it in northern Minnesota at the Cascade River. It shows the river and flood. People normally hike on the left hand side. The water was so high it was rushing over the top of it and creating a new waterfall. It appears in my 2025 calendar. My calendar is currently 30% off with the code HANSEL30. The discount runs through Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 11:59 PM EST.

Threats to the Boundary Waters

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and it's a place that changes lives. People who visit often return home with a greater understanding of the value of the outdoors and the need to protect it. It's also America's most visited wilderness with over 1 million acres protected. As far as canoeing, it contains over 1,000 lakes and over 2,000 campsites. The lakes are…
