Congratulations (again!) to @yabellini for being named a 2025 GitHub Star ⭐ for all the amazing work she does for the scientific open-source community. We're lucky to have her at @rOpenSci

Just out from CDC: A really great review of ethical dimensions of data science in public health. It gives a practical set of questions for researchers and data scientists to consider in themes of privacy, responsible stewardship, justice as fairness, and inclusivity and engagement.

Anyone have a preferred GUI for LLMs that's good for both local (Ollama) and remote APIs? I like @simon's llm for the CLI.

It would be great if there was a an GUI front end that used the llm library so they could share logs and templates.

I like LM Studio but it's local-only. Zed and other IDEs support both but are coding-specific UIs.

https://msty.app/ actually does fit the bill. I haven't found it that ergonomic for some reason. Maybe I'll give it another go.

With so many news sites adding audio versions of their stories I'd really like a "send to my podcast app" workflow.

I need some sort of "data saver" mode for my MacBook for when I connect it to my cellular hotspot. Is there some program that makes it easy to block network access for all programs except for a whitelist temporarily?

I love that every model has a web-optimized version and a "Presentation Slide" version for sharing with a classroom:

Ooo https://www.complexity-explorables.org/ by Dirk Brockmann has an excellent set of mobile-friendly dynamical systems explorables. Responsive design simple enough to collapse elegantly to all fit on a phone screen. I'm not making such fancy sim viz but maybe I can get a similar layout with #RStats /#Shiny

👆🏻 I'm going for zero equations, zero typing. Sliders and gestures and graphics, for a captive but interested group with no presumed math background.

Anyone have an example of a web app for exploring/teaching the dynamics of an ODE system (e.g., SIR epi model, predatory-prey, etc.) by changing parameters that is particularly well-designed for mobile? #RStats / #Shiny a bonus, but mostly good use of tiny phone screens, not just default Bootstrap.

Going through and pulling things before I nuke my facebook account. I hadn't really used it for years, and it seems much of my network was the same. So many friends pages have nothing except an annual burst of happy birthday posts.

Anyone who has done a bulk dump of their Meta account data: how long does it take to show up? I imagine the queues may be quite backed up right now.

Ah, update: I thought I would get an email when it was done, but did not. Logged into the account center the next day and it was ready. Others reported a few hours.

I never do this - I'm a millennial who never makes phone calls - but I called both my senator's offices this morning to implore them to oppose RFK Jr's nomination as health secretary, and to twist their caucus and colleagues to do the same. You can, too. Call the Capitol switch board at (202) 224-3121. Tell them to VOTE NO.

A neat paper from the Epiverse team laying out the progress and challenges of the #rstats ecosystem for disease outbreak response: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landig/article/PIIS2589-7500(24)00218-8/fulltext

An interesting part is the frame of predictable vs. unpredictable tasks in the early stages of the outbreak.

One thing that I wonder is if the R world of this stuff is too insular, and this keeps some of these tools from making their way to other groups, turning into web-based tools, etc.

I'm have pretty mixed and unsure opinions about the societal value of LLMs and similar "AI" tech but https://citymeetings.nyc is a GREAT example of how they can be used for positive, democratizing purposes.
