Almost done with “Genius”, by Gleick.

Feynman had his faults, to be sure, but I finally have enough context to appreciate his work.

His style and posture regarding the nature of physical reality resonates deeply. I can’t help but feel some regret that I didn’t get exposed to him as a kid. I think it would have been very grounding.

Also, just want to add that getting the train routing working properly is so much fun! If I had the money or space when I was a kid to get into model train stuff I would definitely have done so… also one of my favourite real life places in the world is Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg! This scratches a certain itch #factorio

Decided to spend my holiday binge playing #factorio. I knew it had been a while, but yeah, I have no concept of time. I last played when it was still in beta and “beat it” (part of why I lost interest).

Wow, there is so much more mid-game now. When I last played there were no science packs above purple.

I barely needed a working railroad before and now I have this crazy network going and haven’t even gotten to making yellow science packs yet.

The creature AI seems less aggressive than before, I’ve been doing my best to keep pollution low with lots of solar power, but I get the feeling that it’s going to worse suddenly.

Anyway, tons of fun 😊

slogged our way through Dune Prophecy. I guess it’s okay? Not great, acceptable on a certain level. I don’t really like the pacing, had high hopes for the writing. Some decent action in the last episode. Overall Meh. Will probably watch the next season when it comes out but overall it’s a bit flat.

Uh yeah, that’s it. I mean, you can give a more complicated answer but I don’t know if there is a simpler one.

So does that also mean that quarternions are just four dimensional numbers?

Oh yeah! Three imaginary plus one real.

And yes, it’s a good rabbit hole: you can have complex numbers of any dimension you want, you’re just not going to be able to represent them geometrically

After reading Quantum Man about Feynman I’m left pondering why I’ve had so little exposure to real quantum theory throughout my life

I’ve been able to get a feel for relativistic physics despite so much pop culture BS, but with quantum physics I don’t think I have ever gotten past the veneer.

Pop culture has completely mangled this subject, and I haven’t really known anyone personally who understood enough it who could give me some insight.

This book isn’t really that technical, but the author is a scientist and he doesn’t shy away from some grittier details. It has sat on my bookshelf for at least a decade, I’ve tried to read it several times and got no where.

It’s pretty satisfying to have progressed enough in my understanding of formal mathematics to be able to appreciate the subject finally. I don’t know what will come of it but there is a whole layer of knowledge here that is accessible where I never thought I would get it before.

Consider how much software changes over time, and the tendency towards #enshitification. Even if we like the app right now and give it a good rating the developer could change it tomorrow and make it awful but how long before that shows up in the reviews?
