[#]GreaterManchester MP Jonathan #Reynolds was being particularly foolish (or ignorant or malevolent) on BBC Radio 4 #Today, this morning, arguing that 'sustainable jet fuel' (no such thing) would mean increased flights won't be a problem.

Aviation emissions are topical today.#ManchesterAirport want to double flights.

We calculated that would add nearly 23 Mtonnes of CO2e (Greater Manchester's already blown, Paris consistent, fair share carbon budget is 67 Mtonnes).

[Not very] Clean Air Zone proposal accepted.

Initial quick reaction: In another bad decision from the government, the GMCA (not very) Clean Air Zone proposal has been accepted.  This was what the previous government sat on for three years. #GreaterManchester will be the only major city in the country without a proper clean air zone, its citizens condemned to breathe the #particulates and #NOx spewed by private cars and commercial vehicles

"A massive building programme is not actually required to create the number of homes needed"

"Those houses to be built by the developers will not solve the housing crisis."

"The NPPF is not just about housing. It also covers building for other purposes, and large infrastructure projects are part of that. Some things are clearly necessary [but] others are being prioritiseed but others are antagonistic to Net Zero."

Every day, a cabinet minister repeats the mantra, "going for growth", "laser focussed on growth" "growth is the only way".

Are they ignorant, foolish, or just plain malevolent?

Instant Whip!

Legislation, legislation, legislation! Two things are happening now to make sure the UK is legally bound to keep its carbon emissions as low as possible. They both urgently need more people to take action if they are going to be effective. Without these, the government is currently aiming for more economic growth that will without doubt add even more to the 1.5 degrees increase that now seems inevitable, even if they promote it as “greener”.

Protection of green space isn't just for 'nimbys'.

78 % of people believe it is important for the government’s housebuilding strategy to protect nature and green spaces, only 4% believe it is not important.

Support is consistent among Labour (83%), Conservative (86%), Liberal Democrat (85%), Reform (83%) and Green Party (84%) voters.

69 %support a ‘brownfield-first’ policy, with just 6% opposing.

Pleased to say our activity on "green growth within degrowth" worked really well

People engaged with it, appreciated it being interactive, and we had some great conversations.

Nobody questioned the premise: to have green growth you have to reduce economic (material) activity elsewhere.

Campaigners protest pension fund's '£1.5bn fossil fuel investments' | The #Bolton News

It's worth noting that while Greater Manchester Pension Fund makes claims for its policy of engagement with fossil fuel giants, it has never demonstrated success of that strategy in reducing emissions.

Other investors have concluded that exit (#divestment) is the only ethical option.

Manchester City Council extends its commitment to divestment

Manchester City Council has previously called for the Greater Manchester Pension Fund to divest its shares in the fossil fuel industry.  It has now re-affirmed and extended that call, adding the armaments industry. Manchester City Council does not manage the Pension Fund, which receives the superannuation payments from employees and employers in the 10 Greater Manchester councils, the GM Combined Authority…
