[#]ClimateDiary Oh God. Not surprising from this awful Labour government, but still. This ludicrous, stupid, thoughtless, unimaginative and of course destructive chasing of growth is just … just so bad. No words
Also: i don’t enjoy hating this Labour government! Hating the Tories was more enjoyable!

Just a quick note of apology for my silence here; not that it’s needed or that anyone necessarily reads it. It is strange, I seem to have completely lost the desire to share thoughts on social media. It seems to have just evaporated.
Also to even be on here. I am fine, personally,; but I think it might be linked to complete overwhelm with where we are at. Just shutting off lots of stuff, somehow. Hope it will change but just wanted to explain - and feel bad as I hadn’t kept up #ClimateDiary

[#]ClimateDiary Good programme on how climate change and geopolitics intersect in the Arctic that puts Trumps’ #Greeland ambitions into context. Melting ice opens up trade routes and access to resources that make the Artic a real “hotspot” (so to speak).
Also interesting on the Arctic convention that is so far working well to ensure cooperation and prevent conflict - let’s hope it holds up!

[#]ClimateDiary 'I have nothing to go back to' - LA fires heartbreak
“As a climate reporter, I am used to covering extreme weather events. Just a few weeks ago I was interviewing residents who had fled the Malibu fires. Now I'm on the other side of the story.”

[#]climateDiary I take it back. The fires are catastrophic, for so many people it’s far beyond “almost normal”. My sister just told me about a friend who has lost everything for the second time (her first house burned in another California wildfire). Thinking of everyone going through this now. #LosAngeles

Just to add: at first I thought it was pretty unusual to have wildfires in California at this time of year but now read that
“Santa Ana winds are common in southern California during cooler months and have fueled many of the Golden state’s most ferocious wildfires.”
(Reading/writing this from the UK - pretty clueless!)

[#]ClimateDiary Hollywood engulfed by wildfires in January. But everything just carries on , with some adjustments- the new #AlmostNormal.
“The Screen Actors Guild Awards has cancelled its live in-person nominations announcement that were scheduled for tomorrow due to the wildfires and strong winds in Los Angeles.
Instead, it said in a statement, nominees will be unveiled via press release and its website tomorrow morning.”

[#]ClimateDiary #EV #EVs
3/3 Yes, I KNOW. I have read a lot about it; have had students doing dissertations about #EVs; i am aware of environmental and social costs of production. Etc.
I personally hate all cars. If it were up to me we wouldn’t have one at all. But i am not the only one in this family and so we do. An #EV is a kind of compromise.

[#]ClimateDiary #EV 2/3 like 36 hours for a 80% charge (2kw/h); or it’s extremely expensive. As in 2x more expensive than petrol.
I am not surprised that the take up has been so much slower than was hoped. The whole “it’s only for rich people” critique is very valid: it only makes any kind of economic sense if you can charge at home, which exlcudes many. It’s really crap and depressing in itself.
Now bracing myself for no doubt many responses pointing out that #EVs are not the solution.

[#]ClimateDiary Ok this may come across as privileged conplaining - i mean, i have a feeling it does, whixh is kind of indicative in itself, because really it shouldn’t:
we just got our first #EV and whilst waiting to have our own charger installed (which is expensixe and you need to have off-road parking space), we are using public charging points and: the infrastructure here in the UK is crap! It’s either very very slow (like these ones in a local car park (also flooded, inside, today) 1/3

[#]ClimateDiary Reading Orbital, by Samantha Harvey. About astronauts. And yes, it’s as powerful as everyone says.

2/2 But I AM optimistic about community and strength in the growing realisation that #ClimateBreakdown #ClimateCollapse is happening right now and that this is where we need to act from; that we still have each other, and this is not nothing.
I love the community we have here on #ClimateDiary. And I will be doing the #SurvivingTheFuture module with @DarkOptimism
this spring. Very much looking forward to it!

[#]ClimateDiary Wishing everyone here all the very best for 2025.
2024 has been a terrifying combination of catastrophic climate events on a level somehow not quite anticipated yet (by me at least); more and more science showing that past models may have been too cautious; and what feels political deprioritising of climate action across the world.
Not too optmistic right now that
2025 will be different; NYE itself part of this climate impacted reality! BUT 1/2

[#]ClimateDiary 31st December 2024; visiting family, little climate/environment/political economy snapshot. Checking weather report to see if travelling back tomorrow still possible; mother-in-law looking in astonishment at blossoming cherry trees next door; spotting “Say No to 4500 new houses” (to be built on flood plains) signs along road.
