Research integrity violations are actions deemed undesirable by the scientific community, codified in guidelines such as the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity. Integrity violations are ordered on a continuum of from minor to grave offenses. Fabrication, falsification and plagiarism are commonly viewed as more serious offenses than questionable research practices and ‘sloppy science’.

What could #metascience learn from #criminology for the prevention of #researchmisconduct and #researchintegrity violations? In a seminar at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR), I discussed with researchers in criminology how theories and findings from the field may be applied in the field of meta research.

Open question: what do you consider as "data"? How would you define "data"?
[#]data #datascience #rdm #fair
Background: I'm on a national committee developing guidelines for data design, collection, sharing and storage. We want an inclusive definition, capturing the full range of traditions in the social and behavioral sciences, from ethnography to RCT #openscience #transparency
We didn't know a common accepted definition - all suggestions are welcome!

...with patience and persistence, some things do happen after all. I'll teach the course in another form next academic year (January 2026) as part of the new Sociology master program at @vuamsterdam
Meanwhile, the materials remain publicly available without restrictions, because I'm committed to open science, also in education. The website describes 35 forms of bias and suboptimal research practices, and provides solutions on how to identify and solve or prevent them. https://detectingbadscience.wordpress.com/good-science-bingo-2/

Not everything works right away... With great enthusiasm I had developed materials for a Winter School "Detecting Bad Science" https://detectingbadscience.wordpress.com/
Despite the encouragements of many of you here, the number of enrolments in the course remained below the minimum break-even point. So I won't be teaching the course in January.
But...[1/2]

Today in Detecting Bad Science: Replication Failure. When independent researchers repeat a study, the results may be quite different. The hallmark of reliable knowledge is a successful independent replication. If another team of researchers repeat the study and find results in the same direction, with a similar effect size, you can be confident that the original result is a robust and generalizable finding.

Looking back at my career thus far, I see four things that helped me advance in academia: freedom, help from others, coincidence, and quirkiness. Plus privilege, health, naive optimism, and openness.

Recently I asked for the data and code for a study that a journal invited me to review. Authors provided data, but "No code was used as all analysis were performed with SPSS."🤔
Let's see whether this is an exception to the rule that "It is often impossible to reproduce the results without knowing all the steps followed in the analysis, even when a detailed methodology is provided.", as this article found:
