If at the end of things, my life turns out to be primarily a tragedy, and I'm never given the space to heal, and trauma is piled upon trauma, I'm at least going to see it through to the end, and leave behind a truly beautiful, if heartbreaking, story.

Today, I find myself meditating on the 5 remembrances. Paraphrased:

1. I cannot avoid aging.

2. I cannot avoid sickness.

3. I cannot avoid death.

4. I cannot avoid becoming parted from all that is dear to me.

5. I am the owner of my actions.

I'm not skilled enough to think beyond this. All I can say to you is that today, I am here. You are here. And we don't know what will happen tomorrow.

I am trying to sit with all of this instead of trying to avoid it.

I've been leaning on this old chestnut a lot recently. It's bitter advice to try and follow, but it's been very true during some times in my life where I thought the something was definitely Very Bad and portended more Extremely Bad Stuff.

Reality is so random, we really don't know what will happen next. And fear is a poor adviser.

Once upon a time there was a Chinese farmer whose horse ran away. That evening, all of his neighbors came around to commiserate. They said, “We are so sorry to hear your horse has run away.
