As a GenX teacher, it's exciting when I find new media that connects with my students and allows me to make references they get, and I'm here to say, "the work is mysterious and important."

TL;DR: unity requires: dignity, honesty, and humility...

...but it's not too long, and you don't have to read—watch. Yesterday's homily at the the National Cathedral on the occasion of the presidential inauguration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwwaEuDeqM8

This interview w/ Ted Chiang is really good. Like @melaniemitchell & Alison Gopnik, both cited in the piece, I often reference Chiang's framings of AI, using a couple of his pieces as required readings in my AI & the Law course.¹ Well worth the read.

Musk would like people to think he's Tesla, and though it's tempting for some to assume he's really just Edison, it turns out the truth is closer to Ford. You don't make that motion twice and not know what it looks like or how it will be interpreted.

I now understand China's plan to destroy US w/ #TikTok.

  1. Make popular app

  1. Get Congress to write a law that predictably forces it offline

  1. Get POTUS to sign it

  1. Get SCOTUS to say it's good

  1. Wait for US to elect new POTUS & induce him to tear down the rule of law to reverse the outcome.

To be clear, whatever your opinion of the law in question, endorsing the idea that the President can somehow "fix" the current situation, absent arranging for a sale, is to endorse lawlessness.

11yo: Why do they keep using the transporters? They seem really dangerous.

Today’s #StarTrek #TNG ep.: Pickard is transformed into a kid by a transporter accident.

Pickard: Thanks No. 1

Ferengi: …

Pickard: He’s my No. 1 dad.

I was thinking about yesterday's tomorrows, and while the 1950's future never came to pass—moving atoms is hard; think flying cars—we're doing pretty well with the 1980's version of a planet in climate crisis run by mega corps and misinformation merchants. Maxheadroom is ripe for a reboot.

The 11-year old was singing along to Defying Gravity. I joined in. He muted it, and we both continued belting out a good chunk a capella. This has made my day. Art is magic!

‪@lolscotus's running timeline of bits that prompted laughter in oral arguments before just doesn't hit the same as it did back in 2015 when it first came online, like this one from yesterday. "Well, it's always fun to talk about grammar and --" Nothing, I feel nothing.

My family gets me. Today for my 46th birthday, I got a signed copy of Robert Caro's Working, a game of chess with the 6yo (there was a coupon), Pokémon with the 11yo, Belgian waffles for breakfast and the 6yo's help working on a #LEGO set (the Mars Perseverance rover). 👌🙏

I can’t stop thinking about this quote from Thomas Paine, "When a man has so far corrupted and prostituted the chastity of his mind, as to subscribe his professional belief to things he does not believe, he has prepared himself for the commission of every other crime." Sadly relevant ~230 yrs later.

My first thought on hearing about the Zendaya & Tom Holland engagement, "Good for them. They seem like nice kids."

It's official, I'm old.

The 6yo, 10yo, and I like to read poetry over dinner. We keep a rotating supply on the table. Anyhow, one of today’s poems—Wall Marks from Shel Silverstein—was a tearjerker.

Kids wanted to stay up late. So we watched the Princess Bride. Given my fuzzy understanding of Saint Ignatius's early life as a swashbuckling Spaniard & the fact his name was Iñigo, I like to imagine it’s a bio pic. So Iñigo doesn't go on to be the Dread Pirate Roberts but rather found the Jesuits.
