Finally got around to putting in my votes for Triple J's Hittest 100. It was tough to narrow it down, but I got there in the end. I was surprised that The Cure had to be manually added. I would have also added a song by Travis, maybe Gaslight. But it's probably a bit silly doing too many manually added songs.

At some point our music teacher wanted to get the whole class to play a song together. A bass player was needed, and I happily put my hand up. I had discovered my instrument! I even got lessons for a while through the high school. At around the same time, grunge happened. Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden caught my attention. This was great, something that somehow really spoke to me. I also discovered Aussie bands, in particular, Front End Loader. They never got really successful, but they made music that I enjoyed, and showed me that you can do this, even in Australia. I showed them to my friends, and my friends showed me Tumbleweed and You Am I. Then, via compilation records I discovered Pollyanna and Big Heavy Stuff. Recovery became a thing, and I could see all of these band doing live performances on the tele, while also learning about bands like Frenzal Rhomb and The Avalanches. We could even go to concerts and see these bands live for relatively little money.

I had tried to learn the keyboards when I was younger. My mother played and taught the piano. I enjoyed it somewhat, but I’m not sure if it’s always a good idea for parents to teach their kids these kinds of things. My sister played the keyboards pretty well though, so my parents arranged for her to have a different teacher so that she could better learn the instrument. She could sing as well. We also had an acoustic guitar lying around the house. I don’t remember when it was bought, but it was bought for my sister, so that she could go busking. So, I took music as a subject at high school, with only my beginner level of keyboard playing skills to help me along. Most of the other boys played the guitar, and eventually I managed to pick up a few chords from some friends. That was fun.

I know it’s not the same for everyone, but music has always played an important role in my life. Neither of my parents seemed particularly bothered by what they listened to, even if they did prefer some things more than others. I do remember, however, that we would sit around as a family and watch Countdown. 1980’s Australia. It was the best way, as far as I was concerned at a young age, to discover new music. I remember generally liking the bands more than solo artists. Saturday morning Rage would play the charts. My sisters, particularly my eldest sister, were more than happy to listen to the top 40. As the 90’s approached and I got closer to my teens, it was bands like Transvision Vamp and Ratcat that really caught my attention. Music that didn’t seem as safe as the other stuff that I heard. Rock music. I got into Guns n Roses. Through one of my sisters and her cool friends I discovered The Doors and Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden

An interesting article. It doesn't necessarily try to find an answer, only pose the question, and it is as true in Germany as it is in many other countries. When there are so many problems to address, in this case, failing infrastructure, why do the political class decide that they would rather attack refugees and immigrants?
It is particularly disheartening when Partys from the "left" start taking part. It really only strengthens the far right Partys, who can now say, "we told you so, we said it first, and we are best equipped to deal with it".
