My beloved racing green Blix Vika Flex+ foldable e-bike was stolen in Seattle on Saturday night and taken to the Madrona Highlands housing complex next to the Edmonds Lutheran Church.

I've managed to track it there until 10 AM on January 6th when the hidden AirTag was likely found & disabled by the thieves.

If you know anyone in and around Seattle who might see this bike out and about, please send them to the BikeIndex theft report: https://bikeindex.org/bikes/2744821

There’s less than $1000 left and 56 hours left for the Akitsu Guesthouse & Shop project to be fully funded. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/akitsu/akitsu-guesthouse-and-shop/

If you know anyone who’d be down to support this lovely small village restoration & revitalization effort, now’s the time to do it.

Hopefully this will only be the first grant in Noah Gibbs’ memory.

If you run a Ruby or Rails conference next year, please consider allowing folks to donate some money or a portion of their own ticket cost so folks who can’t afford a ticket can attend your conference.

There’s no better way to honor him and foster the kind of inclusive community he so deeply valued. https://ruby.social/@andycroll/113724283704731292

If you love Japan, crafts, coffee, and community there’s a good chance you’ll love this project to restore an old Japanese farmhouse and turn it into an inn and coffee shop. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/akitsu/akitsu-guesthouse-and-shop/posts

Here’s a lovely peek into Nikita’s project: https://youtu.be/ifTlapa1cek?si=faOiapcOuujCAA6K

The Kickstarter campaign is very close but needs a few more backers to succeed. Pass it on.

A friend shared these amazing videos from Branch Education with some of the most intricate and helpful visual technology explainers I’ve ever seen.

https://youtu.be/1I1vxu5qIUM?si=9hrMO6SVnBL5PGJU

I’ve worked in technology education for over a decade and visualizing concepts is incredibly time consuming and difficult.

The Bluetooth episode is a fantastic example of taking a subject that could be dry and confusing and doing everything possible to make it understandable.

The voice over work is excellent too. 👍👌🤩

Here's a glimpse of the resolution used by healthcare providers to think about communication with patients.

I wish we'd aspire to some of this subtlety when discussing technology and its societal ramifications.

Obvious example: lawmakers who rarely have the expertise to understand tech concerns and end up routinely over- or under-concerned about a topic of tech company.

Makes me miss @calebhearth.com who gave such a sobering presentation about ethics in technology back in 2017.

The talk was called "Don't Get Distracted" and I still think about it to this day when I see tech folks hand wave away ethical concerns about their wares.

https://calebhearth.com/dont-get-distracted

I challenge anyone working in and around technology to read/watch this and not feel some sort of realization that we've all encountered situations like these at difference scales.

Attending a healthcare ethics talk at ASHA today at I truly wish these kinds of presentations had been commonplace in technology conferences for the past ten years.

I'm sure it wouldn't have solved the major ethics clusterfucks technologists keep diving into but at the very least people's ability to pretend we're all "making the world better" would be undermined.

Had a nice year discovering tons of new (to me) plants, birds, and fungi with iNaturalist Seek app. https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/seek_app

If you have nature lovers of any age in your life, one of the best gift you can give them is the ability to understand the world around them better.

It’s a free, open source, and privacy-respecting app which requires no account to use, so it’s safe for little ones.

PS: iNaturalist is a 501(c)(3) you can also donate to: https://www.inaturalist.org/donate

It's just so lovely when two already delightful subjects cross-over.

Scott & Jess from Scott Brown Carpentry visited a viewer named Nikita who moved to a remote village in Japan, and bought a house there.

She became a cabinet maker's apprentice and asked them for help to work on her 100 year old house, while showing them around the town. It's even more delightful than you might imagine.

To install a heat pump water heater, a well respected plumbing & heating co insisted I consider a resistive electric one because “they’ve seen some issues on models around 6 years old” on hybrid units.

I’m know the bias (existing inventory, lagging expertise, etc.) trades tend to have against more efficient tech but come on.

Their install offer for resistive electric was $500 more than for resistive + heat pump if I buy the unit (with its 10 year warranty) and have them install it. Cool. 😏

It’s sickening to once again face how much we can’t underestimate the deep reaches of racism and misogyny.

Worst of all, how they unite to prevent desperately overdue progress.

Whatever happens tomorrow, it should never have been this close. In any of the electoral races. Not remotely.

Until the cult of individualism dies, the U.S. will fall further and further into fascist disrepair and chaos.

Gotta love all that time we’re saving with AI.

What’s not to love about a mimicry motor with a stator made of pure statistical overconfidence combined with a systemically biased input data rotor?

Sure… it explodes every other day but a new one will stay cheap as long as we keep destroying the planet faster to make them.

Guess the Washington Post and its cowardly owner Jeffrey Bezos joined the darkness where democracy dies.

If those filthy rich men had even a gram of courage, you’d think the money would bolster it.
