I endorse this message. And you can also pick it up for three quid more on Blu-ray from places like HMV if you’d prefer a physical copy. (https://hmv.com/store/film-tv/blu-ray/ready-or-not)

I wish there was an easier, clearer distinction betwen AI and ML for this sort of thing. Empirical analysis of images or data and identifying patterns from them (what I think of as ML) is much more sophisticated and accurate than the AI nonsense that I keep being told will solve every business problem I have, generate (awful) images for me or summarise something I should probably read anyway.

It’s good to know that even Nigel Farage isn’t right-wing enough for Elon Musk: https://news.sky.com/story/farage-doesnt-have-what-it-takes-musk-says-reform-uk-needs-a-new-leader-13284086
The fact that he is a supporter of Tommy Robinson underlines his beliefs and I do wonder how long businesses, celebrities, the UK Royal Family, and other will carry on implicitly endorsing him via the use of X.

I hope I’ve not just missed it but the ability to set up a new #Kindle as a clone of an existing one would be incredibly useful.
As would be the option to buy a new Oasis but the latest Paperwhite is really rather lovely anyway.

One of the joys of being over-50 is that when I turn of Apple Intelligence I can justify it to myself as being a curmudgeon and I’m comfortable with that.
I tried it on my iPad for 36 hours and it just irritated me that things like Mail tried to summarise emails in a tiny view where you couldn’t see most of it even if you’d wanted to.
I’m sure that people will find it immensely useful but I’d rather give someone a job as my PA if I reach the point where I’m too busy to read things myself.

Still wnthusiastic for it! Cable labelling might be needed but I still believe that a single standard for electronics will be beneficial.

Happy birthday @Halle. 🎉
I can never remember if you’re the same age as me too but I’m pretty confident about saying that we’re wearing the years well and hopefully both still feel a lot younger than we really are!

After a year full of changes around the globe, many of which are not for the better, it’s a happy coincidence that one I really like occurs on my birthday. And although the UK being out of the EU potentially lessens the impact here I really hope that we essentially benefit from it too as a knock-on effect.

The #Supernote Manta is now available. It’s the 10.7 inch version of the Nomad (7.8 inch) which I have been gushing about for the last week. It is the same sort of size as a reMarkable 2 and that will tick a box for a lot of people.
I’m still in my returns window so could change to it but, as I learnt very quickly, the A5-sized form-factor works much better for me than an A4-sized one so I’m keeping my Nomad.
And, for the record, it’s been six paper-free days so far.

I've written up some first impressions of my #Supernote Nomad after a couple of days of initial use: https://blog.sgawolf.com/post/2024-12-08-supernote-first-impressions
The bottom line is that it is everything I hoped my reMarkable would be and it is in the perfect form-factor for me.

The product name however is going to take a bit of practice to remember: #Supernote A6 X2 Nomad.
I’m sure I’ll be blogging about it over the coming days and weeks.

I feel socially awkward saying hello to a neighbour. I kind of wish I had the sort of self-confidence someone like Fridman appears to have. But then I think I’d also be someone I may not like very much.

On Monday DHL got a package for me in Shanghai. They estimated delivery today. Yesterday morning it was still in Hong Kong. I wasn’t optimistic. Since then it has gone to Germany, then over to Birmingham here in the UK and it is now at my nearest main depot in Bristol. It might actually make it which is astonishing. Even if it doesn’t get delivered until tomorrow then it’s had a really good go at making it.

Last night, prompted by reading volume two of his diaries, I watched Michael Palin’s #film, The Missionary which was very good and much funnier than I’d expected (not because he’s not, because I’d always thought it was a period drama). I then immediately re-watched it with his commentary which was lovely and it’s something I’m doing more frequently these days. Not sure if it’s my age, having more “visible” extras on physical media, or just because I’ve had a recent run of great films.

Day one and the new team member does exactly what you hoped they would do (and need them to do) because you, as a developer at heart, forget to ask the important questions yourself.

Around 2007 I fell in love with Claris’s Bento (an incredibly user-friendly, lightweight database application). I even created a website about it (BentoUsers) and ended up being shows a preview of Bento 2 whilst I was in San Francisco at WWDC in 2008.
Then, for some odd reason, Bento was discontinued but Brendan was a more proactive fan than me and he created TapForms to fill the gap and go way beyond what Bento did.
If you like organising things then go take a look.

A bit niche perhaps, but I’ve just published a new blog post about how I populate a changelog table in #TeXLaTeX documents from a separate set of data.
It’s largely for my own benefit because I learnt a lot whilst figuring it out from various solutions I found but it does touch on macros and macro expansion and catcodes and includes a link to the excellent set of articles on #Overleaf about how TeX macros actually work.

It’s lovely when the stars align and someone you know, respect and value becomes available for work just when you need their skills. It happened with @elfenlaid just over a year ago and it’s happened again with @acf.

This evening’s #film was Silent Night (2021) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11628854) which I really enjoyed. I’m pleased I didn’t read the reviews first since I seem to be a bit of an outlier and they may have put me off.
In an odd way it reminded me a bit of Peter’s Friends (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105130/).
