Newish rules light fantasy (Knave, Cairn, Mörk Borg, Troika!, Into the Odd, etc.) is pretty well-represented, but I wish older systems like Advanced Fighting Fantasy and Tunnels & Trolls had better Virtual Tabletop Support.

Yesterday I asked about tabletop RPG content on PeerTube. Got a lot of boosts, but not much in the way of actual (non-video game) leads. So maybe there's some demand that's not being met?

I did find these videos by @rpgroger . The videos are in Swedish but English subtitles may be toggled on. Looks promising.

Fun bit from today’s D&D session. A PC had just recovered from a magical effect that made them disagreeable, reflexively rejecting other people’s statements.

Me: “I didn’t notice anything different about you.”

Got a box from Goodman Games including some pre-XCC Xcrawl adventures I was missing, the stretch goal pack for Crypt of the Devil Lich (one of the Kickstarters I didn’t back; a warehouse find), Grimtooth’s Trapsylvania in hardcover, the Hobonomicon #4 and Inferno Road zines, the Blackout in Crater Valley “VHS Era Slasher RPG” zine, and the XCC dice set.

Got my backer rewards from the Grimtooth’s Old School Traps Kickstarter campaign for Dungeon Crawl Classics. The actual book, two trap-oriented adventures, and stretch goals.

Given my campaign plans for next year, I expect the goofier set piece traps are more likely to appear in my Xcrawl Classics sessions rather than standard fantasy.

Today was my final scheduled RPG session for the year. So here's my year in gaming!

GMed:

Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG (x27)

Played:

D&D 5e (x18 sessions across two campaigns)

SLA Industries (x4)

Honey Heist (x1)

Eat the Reich (x1)

Same number of systems as last year, but many more sessions (51 vs 36).

Tonight the PCs brutally slayed the Grinch and restored the Yule-Light to Christmas Town.

After 8 months, 27 sessions, and five complete adventures, my Dungeon Crawl Classics campaign has concluded for now.

We return to our 20+ year long SLA Industries campaign with the new year, and folks are interested in trying Xcrawl Classics as the next game I run.

It’s only happened for me a couple of times (Barbarians of Lemuria, Apocalypse World), but it’s kind of a great feeling when a player likes an RPG I introduced to the group enough that they decide to run it themself.

I’ve been playing D&D and RPGs for 35 years. Not as long as the original crew, but a pretty decent stretch of time. And Gary Gygax hero worship has never been a part of my involvement with the hobby. His quality as a human being is irrelevant to my gaming.

In January I plan to revive a Mörk Borg campaign that has been paused for a bit over a year. I asked the players if they remembered what they were doing when we left off, and one answered:

“Trying to find meaning in a meaningless world on the edge of destruction?”

When you put it THAT way, maybe the game is closer to the real world than it first seems…

Any GMs out there doing anything clever with random tables?

I’ve got books full of them, but they’re out of sight, out of mind a lot of the time. I’m thinking of compiling them all in Obsidian and using a die roller plugin. Maybe they’ll get more use that way.

My brief experience playing an earlier edition of the game convinced me that it’s not something I would want to run myself (I’m a barbarian guy, not a sorcerer guy, anyway), but the new Ars Magica edition being crowdfunded sure looks pretty.

Handling it as a stretch goal is unusual, but I like seeing them opening so much up to Creative Commons.

Seems like a lot of folks are playing Mörk Borg in October, so here’s my top GM tip for the game:

Add gross-looking but helpful undead NPCs. Undead tend to be kill-on-sight enemies in D&D, but in the Dying Lands they can easily be just another weird guy for the party to deal with. Players LOVE ‘em.

Gross, helpful undead. Trust me on this.

Currently getting completely pwned by a pair of Ropers in today’s Dungeon of the Mad Mage session. The entire party is Restrained and we’ve lost two NPC helpers and the wizard’s familiar.
