Really, those toddler laws of ownership sum up the tech industry alarmingly well. They show about the same level of social and emotional intelligence, and precisely the same regard for the wellbeing of people, society, and the planet.

Remember the Toddler Laws of Ownership, by Kevin McHugh?

They perfectly encapsulate the Broligarchy's attitude to data.

  1. If I like it, it’s mine.

  1. If it’s in my hand, it’s mine.

  1. If I can take it from you, it’s mine.

  1. If I had it a little while ago, it’s mine.

  1. If it’s mine, it must never appear to be yours in any way.

  1. If I’m doing or building something, all the pieces are mine.

  1. If it looks just like mine, it’s mine.

  1. If I saw it first, It’s mine.

  1. If you are playing with something and you put it down, automatically it becomes mine.

  1. If it’s broken, it’s yours.

  1. If it is broken, but you are having fun playing with the pieces, it’s mine again.

  1. If there is ANY doubt, it’s mine.

It's getting to the point where I could work full time giving feedback to companies I have interacted with. No! I don't owe you my unpaid labour!

With Queensland suspending gender affirming care for minors, this seems like a good time to reshare these three blog posts on the impact of gender affirming care, written by young trans folks.

Newsflash: you can't change people's identity, however viciously you try to wield the law. You can only change how dangerous it is for people to live authentically. Which is a hell of a thing to want to do.

"It’s not the general public’s fault that we are so credulous, so willing, so desperate, to believe in AI. We are literally being hyped into it. The AIs themselves are designed to maintain the illusion, with humanising, anthropomorphic language. 'I apologise. I made a careless error. I should be more careful.' "

Because otherwise you wind up with the kind of situation where you force someone with a badly injured knee that can barely hold any weight to hobble from the doorway of the mri room over to the machine with zero support. Causing, at best, severe pain. At worst, exacerbation of the injury. ffs.

Assume systems will fail. Assume people will forget stuff. Assume things that are expected to happen, or be a certain way, will sometimes not happen or be different. Always have backups and workarounds ready.

starting to believe that privilege corrupts, and absolute privilege corrupts absolutely. The luckier you've been, the more likely you are to believe that luck is what you deserve, and what the world owes you.

In my #pyconAU keynote I referred to LLMs as "Regurgitative AI" rather than generative. Someone in the discord then commented that "regurgitative AI sounds like a horrific disease" and... you know... if the shoe fits...

Years ago, while worrying about climate change, I took both comfort and alarm from the idea that there would come a point where everything climate scientists had been predicting for decades would come to pass, and no one would be able to ignore climate science or dismiss climate change anymore. At that point, surely, we would act, and act fast. That, if nothing else, would be our tipping point. Yet here we are.

Dementia is a truly terrible disease. One thing I never understood before is how many deaths a person can die before their physical heart stops.
