The National Institutes of Health (NIH) supports research that improves Americans' health, but Trump is shutting it down, leaving its future uncertain. Research meetings and studies are paused, travel banned, and communications forbidden. A spokesperson claims, “This is a short pause to allow the new team to set up a process for review and prioritization.” However, experts note this could have a devastating impact on health research and put the US behind other nations.

The “Contraception Begins at Erection Act” would make it illegal to "discharge genetic material without the intent to fertilize an embryo.” Criminalizing masturbation isn't the intent, however. Its Mississippi sponsor said, “The vast majority of bills relating to contraception and/or abortion focus on the woman’s role when men are fifty percent of the equation. This bill highlights that fact and brings the man’s role into the conversation.”

This will totally convince people that #ElonMusk didn't intend to make a Nazi salute. 🙄

"To those who can hear me, I say do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed -- the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish."

I shared that my wife had surgery for early-stage cancer, and many of you were very kind and supportive.

She just got her biopsy results back. Lymph nodes and other suspicious areas are negative. She's cancer-free with no need for further treatment! (Meanwhile, her surgery recovery is progressing slowly.)

Thanks for all the support! (A little good news in an otherwise dreary week.)

This was easy to foresee.

"Donald Trump is expected to lift the Biden administration's freeze on the supply of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel in his first days in office, Walla News reported on Monday, citing an interview with the Israeli envoy to Washington.

"Trump is also expected to reverse sanctions the Biden administration imposed against Israeli settlers accused of violent attacks against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank."

Trump pulled us out of the Paris Climate Agreement, and within 24 hours there was more snow on the ground in Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia than in my hometown of Milwaukee.

I'm glad the MAGA crowd voted to release violent criminals, rename a mountain and body of water, shut down public health communications, increase the price of drugs for those Medicare, and ignore climate change. Those seem like the "kitchen table" issues they claimed to care about, right?

I won't claim to know what #ElonMusk intended with his arm gesture at the inauguration. But, I will observe that, for all the discussions around that it was merely an awkward motion, people on the far-right thought it was a Nazi salute.

"'The White Flame will rise again,' a chapter of the white nationalist group White Lives Matter posted on Telegram."

People voted for Trump to raise prices. In his first hours, Trump rescinded Biden's rules that delivered lower prices for medications to those on #medicare and #medicaid. On day one, Trump is delivering higher prices. Yet, I don't see much outcry from Conservatives. It's almost as if this wasn't ever about inflation or prices.

JD Vance on January 6 pardons: "If you committed violence on that day, obviously you shouldn't be pardoned, and there's a little bit of a gray area there."

Trump pardoned almost everyone. God help us when JD Vance is the voice of reason in the Trump administration. Don't worry, I'm sure all the January 6 folks who violently attacked officers learned their lesson and will never do it again.

I've said if before and I'll say it again: After decades of fighting for what is right, not what is most lucrative or beneficial for me, I am tired of fighting for people who won't vote for themselves.

600 people crammed into the Capitol rotunda today, and do you think there's a single CO2 monitor in the place? I'd love to know the air quality in that room.

I just thought of an appropriate comment: Perhaps #rfkjr will get a rapid education in public health following the #inauguration.

In DC, wastewater for viruses is:

High for #COVID19

High for #rsv

Very high for #influenza

Things people have said to me in the last decade:

“Trump isn't going to be nominated, much less elected.”

“The coronavirus isn't going to reach 1 million cases.”

“Stop fearmongering, we'll soon reach herd immunity.”

“Long COVID isn't real.”

If people could stop convincing themselves that everything will be just fine and imagine the worst-case scenario, we'd actually live in a better world.

Meanwhile, Trump is expected to issue a record number of executive orders on his first day in office. Under Obama, Conservatives counted every EO and screamed it was a sign he was an undemocratic leader. Now, MAGA welcomes it.

Nothing about this is politics as usual. It's difficult to imagine what the next four years will be like. Protect yourself and those you love.

Trump, who was handed a blank check when SCOTUS by saying he is immune from prosecution for any official act, has hinted he'll pardon all the people who violently assaulted the US Capitol and Capitol Officers. Will they decide to now obey the law or feel they, too, are immune from any crimes? 2/3
