Randomly remembered a joke that I’d hear skydiving instructors say to their students, during the climb to altitude:

“First time?”

“Yeah”

“Me too!”

Some instructors would say it every time. It always made me laugh.

There are few things more depressing than being forced into a job-search, especially when you’re really happy where you are.

Fuck’s sake, I don’t need this.

[#]iOSDev … I need so make a UI for choosing “time of day” and don’t like any of the options.

Entering numbers via the keyboard is a bit clunky.

Selecting from a list of options is restrictive.

Draggable interactive views aren’t particularly accessible.

I know I’m very late to the party, but started watching Gavin & Stacey this week.

It’s very good. You all knew that already.

This weekend’s hackery was changing my Swift lambdas so they can call Apple’s AppStore API.

There are good things coming in @NearlyDeparted in 2025.

I’m sure my 200 regular users will be delighted!

I signed up for a beginners Chinese Mandarin course, because I need something to stretch my brain which doesn’t involve staring at a computer.

It starts next Tuesday. I am slightly terrified.

I’m not anti-AI… just disappointed that this is being sold as a massive thing, like the invention of the plough, steam engines, the Jacquard loom, or even the e-commerce revolution in the 1990’s.

It’s an evolution in IT, not a revolution.

We’re also gonna learn some hard lessons on what it’s not good for - like when we decided to put radium in toothpaste.

I’m not surprised by our government’s idiotic embracing of AI being our saviour.

They’re desperate for something magical, and here’s a convenient magical thing.

I’ve never used Facebook or Instagram or Threads, but today I deleted my WhatsApp account.

Screw ‘em.

I’m sure you would be a wonderful hire, but if you don’t say where you’re located, or where you’re willing to work… or, at the very least, an approximate timezone… I won’t be boosting your #FediHire post.

Spent the week updating my #Swift #lambdas (for @NearlyDeparted) to Swift 6, and migrated the final two Ruby lambda to Swift.

Thank-you to @sebsto & friends for all your hard work on Swift lambda and the #AWS runtime libraries.

I can now build a single lambda natively, instead of needing to build all 15 in Docker (yay!), but have lost the ability to build for Arm.

Next job: try building on a raspberry pi, as it’s cheaper than buying a new Apple-silicon Mac.

The login experience for PayPal is trash.

Enter username, then passkey, then TOTP code.

Is this why consumers aren’t getting excited about passkeys?

I’ve always joked that regexes are “write-only” code, meaning that they’re difficult to read later… but I find them easier to read than the Swift Regex Builder DSL.

I’ll still use Regex Builder, because it’s more typesafe, but… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Buldak “hot chicken flavour” 2x spicy.

Chilli rating: holy shit, this is hotter than the devil’s armpits

Micro-opinion: not fun

Really don’t like the category stuff in the new iOS Mail app.

Luckily it can be turned off.

(And to also remove the images, there’s a separate “Show Contact Photos” switch in the Settings app)
