"The state of bicycling was very different in 2014, the last time Pittsburgh applied to the program.
For instance, the very first protected bike lanes were just installed on Penn Ave in Downtown and Schenley Dr in Oakland. The bike plan at the time was written in 1999. OpenStreetsPGH didn’t exist. There was no Complete Streets Policy, nor a commitment to Vision Zero. The term “Neighborway” wouldn’t be introduced until 2020, and traffic calming was basically non-existent."

Seeing announcements like this are a reminder that patience and persistence can pay off in amazingly positive ways. Bike PGH has been chipping away at their goals for YEARS (probably like 2 decades) and it's so great to see these things finally realized. A great reminder that small efforts can roll up into big achievements. Small can be big.

We know there's going to be an absolute whirlwind of statements, stories, etc. that get rolled out (we have prior art!) and re-calibrating my relationship with news and news media feels like something I actually have a say in and can control. It feels like one of the ways in which I can be a little more resilient against exhaustion.
Shields up, my friends. (4/4 I guess!)

I think I sometimes feel that staying incredibly up-to-date with every piece of news about a topic will make me feel well-informed and lead to some kind of sense of fulfillment (?), but I just don’t know think that’s actually true. The podcast episode suggests asking yourself: “what is your purpose in following this topic?” To me, that’s such a refreshing way to pause, think, and take a moment to understand what I want out of a thing instead of trying to find the bottom of the thing. (3/?)

I think this is worth a listen if you’re also trying to figure out how to navigate, understand, and interact with overwhelming and exhausting media for the next…however long times. (2/?)
