"Why do we have so little information on the #FOSDEM site about the budget and just how incorporated is FOSDEM as an organisation? How do the laws of Belgium affect the legalities of the organisation? How is the bank account administrated? How much money goes into the costs of this year, and how much of the budget goes into startup costs for the next year? These are reasonable questions to ask of an organisation soliciting sponsorship and donations."

“There’s no doubt that over the past years Twitter has become a low-quality source: the login requirements, the flood of bots, the prioritization of content from paying users and promotion of sensationalist content. But unlike with news sites in our source-rating system, for Twitter there wasn’t really an alternative. But now that viable alternatives are emerging and the proposal thread from yesterday has shown that the community prefers those alternatives, we think it’s time to try and see how the subreddit works without content from Twitter.”

"This week gig workers, trade unions and human rights groups launched a campaign for greater openness from #UberEats, #JustEat and #Deliveroo about the logic underpinning opaque algorithms that determine what work they do and what they are paid. Why, when the restaurant is busy and crying out for couriers, does the app say there are none available?"

“There’s nobody you can talk to. Everything is automated.”

"With Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos and many other tech billionaires cuddling up to an ever more authoritarian Trump administration, it is crucial that the EU sticks to stringent enforcement of its tech laws. However, to solve the core problem, we have to curb the immense grip Big Tech has on our institutions and invest in truly independent digital alternatives."

@beasts Your 'My domains' page seems to have acquired a bug whereby it only allows ordering by 'Z-A' or 'expires last', but not reversing that to 'A-Z' or 'expires first'.

Relatively recent, I'm pretty sure both worked a few weeks ago.

The #CassReview "transgresses medical law, policy and practice... deviates from pharmaceutical regulatory standards in the UK. And if it had been published in the United States... it would have violated federal law."

If we don't keep chasing down the same path, that is. It's not looking very hopeful lately.

Well, there it is. I wonder how many devs and sysadmins just got a yearning to migrate from US to UK... we might become a global tech innovation centre despite ourselves.

"Of all the remarkable people I’ve met, Elon is probably the most likely to remain a world-historical figure—despite his best efforts to become a clown. He is also the most likely to squander his ample opportunities to live a happy life, ruin his reputation and most important relationships, and produce lasting harm across the globe."

"Some would argue the issue of artistic intent or lack thereof. They’d say the prequels were a cash grab. They’d ask “Who does George Lucas think he is to continually revisit and revise his work to sell it back to his fans?” Followed by “And did there really have to be that many Expanded Universe books?” My answer to them is also simple. Who gives a shit?"

"You know what Canada could make? A Canadian App Store. That's a store that Canadian software authors could use to sell Canadian apps to Canadian customers, charging, say, the standard payment processing fee of 5% rather than Apple's 30%. Canada could make app stores for the Android, Playstation and Xbox, too. There's no reason that a Canadian app store would have to confine itself to Canadian software authors, either."
