The current Trump 2.0 shitshow does invite a lot of worrying comparisons with the early days of Nazi Germany (thanks to Elmo for removing any last shreds of doubt).
However, the USA today has a much stronger federal structure than the Weimar Republic in 1933. It will be interesting (*) to see how this plays out.
(* as in "slow-motion toxic chemical freight train wreck right outside my door" interesting π)

Remember Ian Fleming? "Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action."
I do find it hard to believe that all this undersea cable damage really is supposed to have been nothing more than accidents. π€
(I also heard the theory that this is purely to get the insurance companies to pay up, which they would for accidents, but not for sabotage... π€·)

P.S. I guess from an MBA viewpoint, it kinda makes a perverted sort of sense: obviously, the point of energy transport is not to make energy available in a different place, but to get someone to pay for it. And if that can be done with Bitcoin, well... π€·

Ok, at this point I'm slightly embarrassed that I worked at Siemens once.
Bitcoin as... energy transport? What the actual π¦? The second law of thermodynamics would like a word. π

(not to mention the AI slop illustrations in the article, wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing is just some LLM fabulation)

Rats, anyone has an idea how to identify this connector? 8 pins, 1.27 mm pitch, locking tab, and two symmetric key notches. I tried Google Image Search, but that failed completely.
To be specific, I don't actually need the connector, but rather the corresponding plug - if all else fails, I might just try to 3D print something, but at this scale, I'm not sure how promising that would be...

Ah whoops, seems like Starship on IFT-7 didn't make it. But given that this was the first Block 2 model to attempt flight, not actually a big surprise. Gonna be interesting if they will still try for a full orbit on IFT-8.

Somewhere in the dregs of my MP3 collection, I found a couple of tracks from a band called "Umbra et Imago". I apologize if there's any fans around, but they absolutely sound like Rammstein ordered from Wish π€ͺ

OK, my previous record for "how long until I heard back about an application for a faculty position" was 745 days.
This record has just been blown out of the water by University of [REDACTED], with a completely surreal response time of 1531 days.
ONE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED AND THIRTY ONE DAYS, that's over four years!
And they did not even hire anybody in the end. π€¦ What an insane waste of everyone's time. π

Arrrgh, got a used Pixel Watch for the kid, only to discover that the companion app blankly refuses to work on a Google children account with parent supervision. π€¬
Found out that you can remove the supervised account, then launch the app and setup the watch, and then re-add the account on the phone.

Oof, I just finished reading Spook Country by William Gibson, after roughly 18 years π«£ I somehow began reading it at least four times and put it down for too long so I had to start again.
Nevertheless, it's a great book and Gibson is a brilliant storyteller. It's particularly impressive how well this book has aged , given that it's a near-future techno thriller from 2007. The one single thing that feels a bit dated is how everyone still has unencrypted WiFi networks π

Welcome to 2025, which is very likely the only year we'll experience that is a product of two square numbers (and consequently also a square number itself), it's 9Β² x 5Β².
Last one was 1936 (11Β² x 4Β²), next one will be 2116 (23Β² x 2Β²). And if you want to stick with prime squares, then the last one was 1521 (11Β² x 3Β²)!

Interceptor (2022, Netflix).
Terrorists (again) hijack (again) $THING of strategic importance (again, floating anti-ICBM platform in this case) while lone heroine (again) kills them off one by one (again). Meh. π
But the plot holes! Armoured control room with paper-thin outer hatches. Kung-Fu mook popping up out of nowhere. Inside guy waits 10 minutes before doing anything. The mastermind who doesn't just sink the damn thing right away, even though he could... π€¦
2/10.

I currently have an unhealthy love-hate relationship with cheesy action movies. One half of my brain is on the edge of the seat, all-in on the suspense, while the other half is watching in disbelief with comments like "Dude, are you even watching? She just killed three mooks with a wet paper towel, sure, why not." π Not yet sure how to resolve this conundrum π

SAS: Rise of the Black Swan (2021, Netflix).
Evil terrorists hijack $THING (in this case, Eurostar train), lone hero picks them off one by one and saves the day, including girlfriend. Sounds vaguely familiar π€
Extremely derivative action flick that did manage to keep me awake despite holiday food coma, but whether it was the suspense or rather the plot holes... you can NOT just unbolt a hatch on a live gas pipeline and stroll in. π
3/10 at most.
