everyone is looking for the fight. we're coming out swinging at the slightest provocations -- at friends and enemies alike. i get it. i'm freaking out too.

but we're in this for the long haul. we'll only make it through if we have each other to lean on.

in no particular order…

making things easy is hard.

making hard things easy is really hard.

even as someone with an electrical engineering degree, RF circuits are really really hard.

making one simple enough for anyone !¡!ANYONE!¡! is truly amazing.

if you programatically change the text in an NSSearchField, the search field will bafflingly not update the stringValue binding.

i don't know why, it seems like it would actually take work to do.

after hunting around i could not find any way to nudge it into updating things.

but the search field relies on an NSTextView field editor, and I know how to kick that into gear and it works. yeah!

just call the textDidChange: method manually it will trigger the binding to do the expected stuff.

today's AppKit gymnastics:

as i discovered yesterday, removing the border or bezel of the NSSearchField leads to the search text covering the cancel/clear button.

so, i dutifully hid the internal button, created my own and positioned it correctly. fine.

but telling the searchField that it's new value an empty string (even with KVO or using the built-in stringValue method) superficially works -- but leads to inconsistent values between the controllers and views. yuck.

why, you ask?

my mastodon timeline is about 95% politics free.

my bluesky timeline is nearly 100% political reposts.

i follow mostly the same nerdy crowd on both. and most of the same mute filters.

i have hunches but there’s no obvious reason.

ruby really cratered when react took off.

but i honestly don’t see the pull to python. it’s not terrible as a learning tool. and it’s fine for prototyping. but i’m guessing this surge in python means that it’s doing a lot of production work now too.

are you a python dev? sell me on this stuff.

both my kids are doing a CS degrees at different unis.

both had to memorize big O of all search/sort algos.

both had to build lexers, write assembly, and know the difference between combinations snd permutations.

neither had to do any sort of multi-threading or concurrency other than GPU stuff.

AI ad images trained to produce the most “engagement” — by which i mean the most disturbing nightmare fuel you can possibly imagine.

Listerine tear kitty found in my weather app today. But hey, no snow, so that’s good news (since kid is driving back to Flagstaff today).

quirk 3:

in Spotlight typing Cmd-Up/Cmd-Down moves the table-view selection up and down by a whole section.

in Open Quickly typing Cmd-Up moves the insertion point to the beginning of the text. but (sub-quirk -- calling it #4) typing Cmd-Down doesn't seem to do anything at all. that just gets swallowed.

in both typing left/right arrow moves the selection point and typing up/down arrow moves the tableview selection.

that's not quirky. that's actually nice. each item in the responder chain acts on the events appropriate to itself and then passes other events onward.

but still kinda weird that some arrows move one thing and some move the other.

quirk 2:

in spotlight typing tab moves the primary selection from the text to the table.

in Open Quickly typing tab does nothing. both items remain co-primary or something.

quirk 1:

in spotlight the table shows a gray highlight and the text entry gets the primary selection and first responder.

in Open Quickly both the text AND the table view get a primary selection color

wait! wat!?! -- which is first responder?

i don't even know.

has anyone out there in my socials ever built an "Open Quickly…" UI?

i've been looking over Xcode's Open Quickly UI and it's… interesting.

and i've been contrasting it to the Spotlight Cmd-Space UI. also interesting.

they look pretty similar. and they behave mostly the same. but there are tons of quirks in both. and not the same.

just curious if anyone's built a canonical version of this sort of UI. otherwise i'm afraid i'm heading down a world of custom UI hurt and i just can't even.

you know @collin’s term “Mac Assed Mac App”?

we need a corresponding iOS term.

an app that embodies the spirit of iOS.
