03:08 DaemonFC; It's maintained enough to work, for now.
03:10 DaemonFC; I found more Web rot in Wikipedia links.
03:11 DaemonFC; This is really sad, how much the sites they link to take things down and then redirect them to something totally not what you were looking for.

04:03 DaemonFC; starstreakRobin Williams can be scary
04:03 DaemonFC; He's dead now.
04:03 DaemonFC; Poor guy. He lost his mind to Lewy Body dementia.
04:04 DaemonFC; I'm not really sure what could have been done for him though.
04:04 DaemonFC; I happen to think that a rational person can become suicidal due to a bad diagnosis that there's no coming back from, you know. Doesn't mean they're crazy. It means they don't want to go like that.
04:05 DaemonFC; Not everyone who becomes suicidal is irrational, even while they're suicidal.
04:05 DaemonFC; Many are, not all.
04:05 DaemonFC; It's a shame that "Death with Dignity" laws are not more common.
04:06 DaemonFC; The limited availability of physician-assisted suicide leads to people who commit suicide anyway, but in some way that's extremely crude and messy and likely to traumatize other people.
04:07 DaemonFC; Like, oh I have cancer and they're talking weeks to live. "Splat on the Metra train." Then there's an entire train crew that got to look the guy in the eyes while he was killing himself.
04:08 DaemonFC; There's hundreds of people who will be hours late getting to work or where they need to go.
04:08 DaemonFC; It's such a mess that the funeral is closed casket and the relatives can't get closure.
04:08 DaemonFC; It leads to an even bigger problem.
04:08 DaemonFC; Or they shoot their brains out all over the wall and someone has to clean that up.
04:09 DaemonFC; You know, it's not good that there's no doctor-assisted suicide.
04:09 DaemonFC; There should be a three digit number to call when you need help committing suicide.
04:09 DaemonFC; Because 988 isn't going to help anyone. They just load you up with debt and give you some drug company brain chemicals.
04:10 DaemonFC; You get booted out, you still have the same problems that made you call 988 in the first place, and the ones they made.
04:11 DaemonFC; It's a dark subject and so it makes people not want to think about it and come up with pretend solutions.
04:11 DaemonFC; And those pretend solutions and not wanting to handle the problem lead to more problems. They keep giving "Suicide Prevention" more money each year. It's up 40% since 2000.
04:12 DaemonFC; What's up with that?
04:12 starstreak; i still can't get system 8 on the net :(
04:12 DaemonFC; They've never had more money than they do now and suicide rates in the US are at like, almost Japan levels.

06:53 DaemonFC; Now it's really expensive, the store looks like a bomb went off, people are constantly stealing shit and so the cops are standing right there. There's no music, they don't run the air conditioner, in August.

18:48 techuser; ok
18:48 techuser; anyway, I don't disappear entirely like matey, so if I disappear again, you can contact me via email or other IRC places (e.g. TWISTED IRC)

22:27 starstreak; Linux
22:28 DaemonFC; Over the years, Microsoft tried to imply that Linux was "stolen" from Tanenbaum, then used "stolen" UNIX source code (despite the fact that their own consultant at SCO couldn't find anything after months of being paid out of the $20 million dollars Microsoft handed them).
22:28 DaemonFC; Then Microsoft said that it doesn't matter that Linux is original source code, because you can't create any OS without "infringing on Microsoft patents".
22:28 starstreak; Now Microsoft contributes to the linux kernel
22:29 starstreak; We won
22:29 DaemonFC; Some of the patents they sued over concern a hack that allows both a long and short file name in FAT32 (since expired), and claiming that a browser with an address bar infringes on their patents.
22:29 starstreak; i think netscape invalidates their patent claim
22:29 DaemonFC; Most of the patents they've gone public with are so bad that there is prior art going back into the late 80s and early 90s.
22:30 DaemonFC; Well, Microsoft bought Netscape.
22:30 DaemonFC; They stripped it of most of its patents except the ones Facebook wanted, and then sold Netscape to Facebook.
22:30 starstreak; I use brave now
22:30 DaemonFC; So if you use the Mozilla Public License 1.x, then you are giving Facebook a license to make a proprietary version of your program.
22:31 DaemonFC; This is similar to the problem mjg59_ says was part of the Canonical CLA.
22:31 DaemonFC; Except the Mozilla Public License 1.x is even worse.
22:31 DaemonFC; Because it's part of the license itself.
22:31 starstreak; the only problem with freebsd is it doesn't have brave and steam, the linux emulator doesn't work with proton
22:31 DaemonFC; And whoever buys Netscape ends up getting that permission.
22:32 DaemonFC; So for a while, the MPL 1.x authorized Microsoft to make proprietary versions.
22:32 DaemonFC; I had a non-public beta copy of AOL that used the Gecko Rendering Engine instead of Trident.
22:33 DaemonFC; They threatened Microsoft that if it didn't pay to settle Netscape's outstanding lawsuits, that they would go forward with Gecko as the default rendering engine of AOL.
22:33 starstreak; lol u used aol
22:33 DaemonFC; At the time, it was a big threat because AOL was used by over 100 million people in the US alone.
22:33 DaemonFC; And adopting Gecko would have ran IE down to like 40% overnight.
22:34 DaemonFC; So Microsoft paid them a pile of money and signed a contract obligating AOL to use IE/Trident for another 7 years or something.
22:34 DaemonFC; Then AOL didn't need Mozilla anymore and spun it off with some seed money.
22:35 DaemonFC; AOL had the power to destroy IE with one push of a button and make Gecko the main engine for the Web, and they didn't because Microsoft paid them not to.
22:35 starstreak; did you know that AOL started off as a BBS?

22:36 DaemonFC; My Aunt was on AOL all the way back in the Windows 3 days, before they were allowing Internet and USENET access.
22:37 DaemonFC; She was horribly addicted to it, to the point where they were charging her $200-300 a month in addition to a long distance phone call.
22:37 DaemonFC; You had so many hours each month with the base fee to log in and do what you wanted to, and then they started billing by the hour.
22:38 DaemonFC; It became an incredibly unsustainable business model when regular ISPs all started popping up all over the place.
22:39 DaemonFC; AOL tried a lot of things. Allowing Web and USENET access through AOL, letting you pay a reduced fee to run AOL on top of another ISP.
22:39 DaemonFC; "AFAIK The AOL client periodically updates itself to fix bugs and so on but it won't upgrade you from one version to another."

22:40 DaemonFC; But eventually, they'd totally drop support for those old versions.
22:42 starstreak; Windows 3 was actually pretty good and stable
22:42 DaemonFC; It was also a 32-bit OS, technically.
22:42 starstreak; you could make it 32-bit with the win32s package
22:43 starstreak; i wonder if that works with 32-bit mIRC
22:43 DaemonFC; The VMM (Virtual Machine Manager) was 32-bit, but the only thing that it did was enable protected mode and "32-bit disk and file access". It ran the Program Manager and the DOS Prompts and Win16.
22:43 starstreak; im using 16 bit mirc
22:43 DaemonFC; Win32s couldn't run most 32-bit Windows software.
22:43 XRevan86; starstreak: Windows 95 also features the old GUI.
22:44 starstreak; XRevan86, you're talking about progman.exe?
