Ubuntu firmware - the new security update brought a 500MB(!) Linux firmware update! WTF!

Does firmware mean something different from what I think -- stuff that runs on some microcontroller subsystem?

The only thing I can think is it's not literal firmware but emulated firmware. Even so that's extremely big.
