Manifestos "R" Us

Last March, user papa over a grex posted an "Antisocial Media

Manifesto"[1], which was, unsurprisingly, well-received on gopher.

More recently, seliph - the 32nd and final sundog of the Zaibatsu -

shared a "Nomadic Manifesto"[2], with the subtitle "Survival on the

Modern Internet". Surprisingly, papa and seliph both use exactly the

same sentence at one point - "There is no permanent safe haven for us

in this world". I don't know if seliph borrowed this from papa, if

they have both independently quoted a third source, or if this is just

a huge coincidence.

Most recently, Republic sundog spring penned a "Small Internet

Manifesto"[3], further cementing the phrase "Small Internet" which was

coined in an earlier phlog post into the hearts and minds of refugees

from the modern web.

Clearly, we gopherites have a lot to get off our collective chests!

Amusingly enough, I have had a manifesto.txt file languishing in my

home directory on the Zaibatsu sincce November last year. It was

supposed to be a screed on how public access unix systems "should" be

run. Maybe I need to finish it up and put it on gopher. All the cool

kids are doing it, after all.
