Greetings from Australia, gophernauts!

With the obvious exception of the terrible reason that I'm here in

the first place, I have to say that being back Down Under and seeing

family again is quite pleasant. My inexplicable desire to

exhaustively document the namespace of suburban Australian chicken

shops[1] is flaring up again (I had lunch at Chicken Bar yesterday).

Some quick comments on recent occurrences in gopherspace:

• Snowdusk has returned to the phlogosphere[2], which makes me very

happy - he is one of my favourite SDFers.

• Greetings to new circumlunar.space resident sel20[3]! The

Zaibatsu's latest sundog will be exploring the classic cyberpunk

anime series "Serial Experiments: Lain". I'm looking forward to it,

as the show is very nostalgic for me. I discovered it shortly after

I started university and met other anime nerds for the first time.

I am long overdue for a rewatch.

• tfurrows comments that using his reel mower draws unwanted

attention from onlookers[4]. If Missouri doesn't work out, he may

consider moving to New Zealand! Reel mowers are actually relatively

common there - one of the many ways in which NZ feels oddly stuck in

the past.

• Congratulations to Cat on the launch of the brilliantly named

baud.baby[5]! I am also right behind Tomasino[6] in applauding the

wonderful geekery of Cat's collection of old Australian touchfones. I

grew up with the phones he's talking about, although as a "filthy

casual", never gaving a second thought to the various models and

their capabilties.

• Not something which has happened recently, but rather which I have

only recently noticed - christyotwisty has listed[7] one thing she

loves for every year she has lived. I like this idea a lot, and will

have a go at my own list sometime soon.
