paper shredders

a few months ago, i purchased a paper shredder. plopped it down near my kitchen trash can, and have been using it almost daily since then. i still receive some bills/statements in the mail, for the purpose of having a few things that qualify as a proof of residency, if i ever needed to claim such, so those go into the shredder after a month. junk mail? into the shredder. endless credit card and personal loan offers? into the shredder. pay stubs and unneeded previous years tax documents? into the shredder. the list goes on.

the unit itself is an hsm classic 104.3, made in germany, awesome quality. retail price was $400 or so when it was in production. the one i have, i found on ebay for $70 shipped under a different brand name (hsm is also an oem for some chain store brand product lines). once received, i tested it and seemed to operate fine, but i also took the head apart and cleaned out all the paper dust inside, as well as covering the entire shredder cutter block in a generous amount of lube. i'm looking forward to it shredding my documents for the next 10-20+ years.

personal nostalgia trip:

my dad was one of those guys who were into tech in the 80s/90s (you'll probably be seeing some form of this line a lot in the future). one of the things he kept up-to-date were paper shredders. every few years he'd purchase what was essentially the consumer/prosumer totl fellowes-branded shredder. a shredder was released that can shred credit cards? it was in his hands in short order. same goes with a shredder that can handle cds and floppy disks.

there would be days and/or nights where he'd be shredding a ton of stuff at once, work-related paperwork from the past year, piles of statements, etc. with my bedroom being next to his home office, i heard his shredder humming along and chewing the paper... a lot. i heard it so often that my brain ended up treating it like white noise, it used to put me to sleep. it was the saving grace during a few nights when 6-12 year old me was having trouble falling asleep-- just focus on the shredder humming through the floor and wall and i'd be asleep in no time. count the hums not the sheep.
