On This Day in 1912 Robert Scott Reached the South Pole

He was hoping to be the first there, but his journal speaks of his disappointment when he found that the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already been there a full 34 days prior.

Scott and his companions turned around again, but their journey back was never concluded. On March 29th the last three (Scott included) perished, only 20km short of relative safety.

I mentioned in the latest smolZINE that I'm currently reading a book about this expedition. Expect more about this here in the near future 🙂
