With their third album on Claremont 56, I think I’ve finally become a fan of this chillout project. Milvus was released during my summer vacation in the Cyclades, and I didn’t hear it until I returned to California, but it’s become the post facto soundtrack of that trip.

The consistent, expert production and mild melodrama are carried over from their previous releases, but this time around things feel a bit deeper. Musical ideas are better defined, blending the balearic haze of earlier efforts with approachable pop references. It's blatant on the reggae-inflected Coccobello, though my favorite track is the low-bpm deep house crossover Baiadriatica, which has been gettting repeat plays during my drives around LA.

Review: Suzanne Kraft - About You [Melody As Truth] (2021)

## Review: Suzanne Kraft - About You [Melody As Truth] (2021)

I’ve been a fan of Suzanne Kraft’s (aka Diego Herrera) previous releases on Melody As Truth, most of all his 2015 label debut Talk From Home. This earlier work would generally fall under the ‘ambient’ classification, although it was quite a bit more structured than the genre tag would lead you to expect.

About You is in a different category, more akin to artists that became prominent during the so-called chillwave era, circa 2009. Nevertheless, there’s something very fresh sounding about it, and while the vibe might recall that previous era, the production quality is not lo-fi. Several of the songs, like opener On Our Hands, and Waiting, are especially hooky. Perfect for late afternoon enjoyment during the Indian summer.
