Back At It

Well, that was a nice two-week vacation, but now I guess it's done. We had my in-laws over for most of the Christmas week - played a lot of card and board games, watched a lot of NHL and World Junior hockey games - then the second week was mostly ours. Got together with friends, bummed around the house, just kind of did whatever. The weather made this easy: for most of the last week, we've been stuck in a miserable cold snap. The dogs haven't been walked since...Wednesday, I think? Maybe Thursday? And even then, bundled up in their little red coats and the walks shortened in respect of how cold it was, even then.

Saturday was an incredible day, despite the cold. Sunday was mostly spent with friends, out doing things, but bundled up against the cold, moving from the planetarium for a show (for their daughter), to a nearby coffee shop for coffee, hot chocolate, and beer.

Still, hard to fight the feeling all weekend that the gig was up, our time almost over. I'm writing this just past 8 on a Monday morning. I know that by 8:30 I'll be in my basement office, logging in, checking a couple weeks of sparse emails, trying to get my head back into doing actual work. I need to follow up with one of my colleagues - I had someone reach out for a referral regarding a job he was applying to - and I gave him an excellent referral, but I also wasn't going to bug him over the break about that. I've never had better work/life balance than at my current job. If someone talks work out of hours, we shut it down immediately. We left behind the false urgency of unimportant things when we left our previous jobs.

Enough talk. Time to :wq, finish this coffee, and see if I can remember my password.
