"A Brief History of Earth" by Andrew Knoll is a good summary; notable points include that Portuguese Man o' War are in one sense a colony, that Earth sent a hey! oxygen! signal out to the universe recently, and has a particular reflective signature due to visible radiation getting absorbed by the green stuff.
