What is the INetCC?

The International Network of Classic Computers (INetCC) is a group of vintage computer enthusiasts whose goal is to connect classic computers together (via the Internet or otherwise).

"Classic" is arbitrarily defined as any computer model manufactured prior to the year 1998. This year was chosen because it marks the beginning of modern processor architectures which utilize speculative execution as well as modern peripheral interfaces such as USB.

All that being said, though, INetCC does not forbid the use of all modern hardware to participants. The Internet runs on modern hardware, so connecting a classic computer to the Internet necessitates the use of modern hardware at some point in the chain. The spirit of INetCC is to limit only the core system to no later than 1997, but peripheral hardware is unrestricted. This permits the use of modern ethernet switches, cellular modems, floppy drive emulators, and more. Replacement of components of the core system with modern reproductions is also permitted, as it does not defeat the classic computing spirit.

If you'd like to join the INetCC, you are welcome to join #INetCC on the libera.chat IRC network.
