Car Repairs and What It Means to Own Something

2021-08-24

Today and yesterday I've had to try and diagnose an issue I started having with my car where it wouldn't even try to start. It ended up just being a bad starter relay which was the easiest fix possible, but the whole process still got me thinking.

As a total car noob I was able to easily find documentation and troubleshooting steps, get at everything I needed to under the hood, identify the culprit, and quickly get a replacement part. After it all, I almost have a new sense of ownership over my car. Like it's my responsibility and I don't have to rely on anybody else to make sure I can still use it (at least until things really go south).

It's a nice feeling. Shame it seems to be getting less and less common in the tech world due to so many factors. Do you even own something if you can't do basic repairs on it yourself?
