hot take, but national anthems are just terrible songs. the lyrics are bad. the arrangements are bad. everything about them sucks.

Secret, hus hush: no Dutch person knows more than the first refrain, not even the king himself. π

That is hilarious :D
Btw, maybe it sounds okay to the ear, but the words are also cringe, as it dates from 1572, the oldest anthem in use today.
Theres a translation error in the vid where it says "of Dutch blood", as the text actual mentions "of German blood", and later it sings that we always respected the King of Spain.

Proposal: get a new anthem every few years (say, for example, 5).
Additional proposal: don't get tied up by the nationality of the author (I kinda want a j-pop Italian anthem).
Sadly, there are still generations of people who have been trained to love their anthem unconditionally and uncritically (e.g.: my parents).

@typeswitch@gamedev.lgbt The Italian anthem is all about getting the lads together to go to war against Austria. That's a bit dated, I think.

@bovaz the portuguese one is about being very proud and nationalistic, and also about fighting against the british because they "stole" africa from portugal.
... yes really.
they changed one word to no longer reference the british, and they don't really teach any of this in schools afaik, so i guess most people have no clue what the national anthem is about.

@typeswitch@gamedev.lgbt so, if the lyrics don't reference the british, what's the anthem "about" now? How an unnamed someone "stole" Africa?

@bovaz well the anthem didn't talk about africa directly, i just mean that is the reason why the original lyrics said "contra os bretoes" ("against the brits"). now it says "contra os canhoes" ("against the cannons").

@typeswitch it always amuses me that the USA went for an anthem that is so notoriously difficult to sing well, when surely the one thing you want out of a national anthem is for most people to be able to sing it without it sounding terrible

@typeswitch General agreement (fuck patriotism and fuck national pride), but there is one that has a place in my heart as the best/least bad amongst all of them. The hymn from the now defunct German Democratic Republic (a.k.a. East Germany).

The idea of "Risen from ruins, towards peace and good for all" I can get behind. We should have kept that one upon reunification. But of course, you cannot truly take it out from historical context, which sours it considerably.
