My most controversial #comics opinion is that the oft-repeated line "Xavier is MLK, Magneto is Malcolm X" is insulting to all four of these guys.

Chuck runs a goddamn paramilitary
organization prepared to violently defend a downtrodden minority if their oppressors push too far, but expects it to be the last string to his bow, after parallel power and free schools. How are the X-Men and the Academy being CONTRASTED to the Panthers and their social programs? Those two are the only comparable real/fictional pairing.
It only makes sense as framed if you want to reduce the real leaders to "the weak one vs the evil one." Staaaahhhhhppppp.

Dr. King is the only one of these people with both an ethical and tactical devotion to nonviolence. He's completely apples to oranges with the other three. His place in this comparison is only a way to call Xavier wishy-wash, which keep Dr. King's name out of your fucking mouth if you're going to use it that way.

X, again, actually is a pretty good comparison to X. (See what the comics people did there?) Which means the only reason you'd compare him to Magneto instead is to call him a supervillain. Don't.... Don't fucking do that.

Magneto's incomparable to the other three on the opposite end. He's not trying to make a better deal for a minority within a state he regards as... Not legitimate, but probably inevitable. He's a conqueror and a sovereign. He wants to put his people on TOP.

@Nentuaby I've heard comparisons like this before. It's not for me to decide how superficially people want to view MLK and/or Malcolm X, but I will say that I have yet to hear people with opinions like this have anything to say about Dr. Angela Davis, James Baldwin, Fred Hampton Jr., &c.
Nor have I heard them repeat anything Malcolm X or MLK said beyond the most frequently repeated sound bites.
Which is very telling.
