White clothes are not uncommon in Mysterious Lotus Casebook, and the characters wear them for all sorts of reasons. But if you're not Asian there are a few scenes where you probably should imagine the character in black to get the full impact*. One is when Li Lianhua sits beside his shifu's grave, and this one where Fang Doubing learns some sad facts about his family.

• I hope it's common knowledge that while black is the colour of grief and funerals in the West, it's white that serves this function in China and many other Asian countries. OTH I - who wrote my masters on Chinese religion and should know better - watched about 30 episodes of 'Go East' before it clicked why the villain was "the Man In White", so maybe we all need a little refresher from time to time...
