Santorini, Greece. Some residents and tourists are choosing to evacuate from the island of Santorini after a series of strong earthquakes.

After a swarm of more than 200 earthquakes, authorities advise caution. (edited to sound less alarming)

Some people were evacuated. The tremors are tectonic, rather than volcanic.

People are advised to avoid the beaches and shoreline. In the case of a tsunami, residents are advised to head inland to higher ground. Schools are closed.

Some people trying to leave are having difficulties finding passage, or paying for the tickets.

@EugestShirley It's amazing, and maybe fortunate, that this is ramping up over time... i.e. if you want to get out, you can. Versus your house getting thrown off a cliff, etc. (or really... no one can say for SURE there's not magma moving around down there)

@ai6yr

I hope it calms down without either a bigger quake or an eruption.

Quakes do make people nervous. We like to believe in terra firma.

@EugestShirley Oh yeah, definitely don't need either, the human suffering would be terrible either way.

@EugestShirley

You claim that people are evacuated from Santorini but that's not mentioned in the article at all.

@EugestShirley

All I could find is that there are reports of people leaving on their own.

"Ferry companies said there had been an increase in foreign workers leaving the island for the port of Piraeus. A UK government travel advisory referred to guidance issued by the Greek civil protection ministry on earthquakes."

@mycotropic @Mab_813

The Greek experts are anticipating more and stronger earthquakes. They are advising what to do in case of rock-slides or a tsunami.

The rescue team seems to have brought tents and other supplies to be there if needed. The seismic activity is in the Sea of Crete.
