Story time:

Out on my e-bike making a run for coffee beans yesterday morning. On a bike/walk trail, I noticed something go flying off the bike of someone riding ahead of me. I call out, but get no response. Stop by the object that fell, it's a fancy folding lock. Stuck it in my basket and try to chase down the person who dropped it. I'm on a class-3 e-bike, so I'm gaining on straightaways but this rider is really tooting along and I fall behind in turns. #BikeTooter #bikechi #bikewinter 🧵

Toot

The rider dashes up a ramp off the trail and hops across a big, busy street. I follow up the ramp but I'm definitely not as nimble and lose more ground, then a bunch of cars are in the busy street, keeping me from crossing to follow. I toddle down the sidewalk and cross at a signal, fortunately there's a huge intersection and I finally catch them at the light. I get the rider's attention, say, "you dropped your lock, I have it, pull over here and I'll give it to you"

The light changes, the rider pulls out into the intersection. I follow, heading for the crosswalk so I can pull the lock out of my basket. When I get there, I see the rider has doubled back, looking for the lock. I spin back around, now going the wrong way against traffic, thinking this is a really dumb way to get killed. I catch the rider again, reiterate that I have the lock and want to return it.

The rider finally stops, I do too, and at this point my bar mitt pushes against my bike's throttle control, causing my bike to leap at them. I yell in surprise which was probably at least as confusing to them as the bike jumping. I pull the bike around, grab the lock, hand it over. "You're a doll" the rider says. She's at least 20 years my senior, plausibly 30, and I'm having a hell of a time keeping up on my bike that goes 28 mph. BTW, it's 32F outside. Keep rocking it, lady!
