My call for European governments to retain at least a core IT/communication/email/file capability that is independent of US clouds. Named after the iconic Radio Kootwijk which we built in response to the English cutting off our communications with Indonesia in 1916: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/communicating-without-musk-and-trump-cloud-kootwijk/

@bert_hubert Reminds me, I read about the German Bundeswehr's use of matrix recently, covering healthcare communications. It seems like a good use of every nation's army resources to invest in critical infrastructure since they are also supposed to protect it after all. https://element.io/de/matrix-in-deutschland

@burakemir @bert_hubert The ridiculous thing on this is that funding for Matrix from govts is still incredibly small (and not sustainable) thanks to the freerider effect (“why would we pay subscription for something that’s free?”), while they continue to pump huge amounts of € to proprietary US SaaS platforms. ZenDiS and Sweden get it right, but they can’t shoulder it all. We urgently need help.

@matrix
did you talk to @kurtseifried ?
I think he was part of a german open source funding initiative.

@bert_hubert Geweldige vergelijking en goed tastbaar voor een groter publiek, prima werk Bert!
En als we Cloud Kootwijk gaan bouwen, dan hoor ik graag hoe ik bij kan dragen.

@bert_hubert welcome to the club. It seems to me, that governments in Europe see IT as a nuisance not an opportunity nor do they seem to understand that the cloud doesn't just come out of an Ethernet cable. And they seem to fall for the "the data center is in our jurisdiction and we have a contract" fallacy.
If you say this doesn't protect you, you're called paranoid and accused of being overly critical.
Good luck I hope the right people read this, but I fear they won't

@sergedroz This stuff does get read (these days) by the right people. It even gets discussed. But the question is if someone gets up to DO something.

@bert_hubert then you're one step ahead. I feel it's more of an hypothetical discussion, a bit like climate change. The argument always seems to be "Let's stay realistic" completely ignoring the facts. It's wishful thinking.
Maybe it doesn't come to the worst, good. But you can't bank on it.
It seems like someone at the doctor's place who is told he has cancer and needs a hefty therapy. Few say no, because the diagnosis could be wrong or the disease might go away without it.

@bert_hubert it feels like to me that MinBZK is already investing towards that end while working with the FR and DE gov on La Suite and openDesk

@bert_hubert that would be reasonable if not for European politicians wanting/dreaming to be exactly like Trump. We need literally Peoples Internet and Network, not controlled by government or corporations.

@bert_hubert While I agree with the need for independent European IT infrastructure, I wouldn’t use a colonial name. We want to build a better future and don’t need references to a bad past for that.

@bert_hubert I try to convey that message whenever possible. Not always appreciated.
Unfortunately your example is a bit too accurate for comfort: e.g. for email lots of govs/large enterprises are so far down the road that it would be very hard to rebuild the lost expertise. So they need to be out of alternatives before acting.
