TIL that supersede and cede have separate etymologies, and that's why macos dictionary doesn't like it when i spell the former as supercede.
The latin roots being /ˈse.de.oː/ for sedo, to sit and /ˈkeː.doː/, to move along/go/proceed/withdraw/depart respectively.
