@monorail tom7 put a few different video game chess engines in there, but I'd really like to see a tournament with a lot of them. Just, set up memory reading for where the pieces are and feed them to each other. Have Atari 2600 Chess VS Clubhouse Games Chess.

@monorail I remember using an engine called Zillions of Games, 20-ish years ago, on PC. It could simulate more than just Chess, but it was basically designed to simulate any abstract game.

But it just played by simulating as many turns as possible and picking the best option. And you set the difficulty by setting the maximum thinking time it was allowed to have.

@The_T that's still basically how chess engines work. they're a little cleverer in that they'll prune branches that seem bad enough but the fundamental principle is still looking at all the things that could happen

@monorail yeah, totally. The exception is most Chess engines still have a baseline of "good" moves; and a lot of the early strategy in defeating, like, Deep Blue, was playing weirdly so it didn't know what to do.

@monorail just started thinking about: what if there was a chess engine who had to play using a chess clock. And it used all but like 3 seconds on it's first turn, and then every turn after that it instantly moved based on 0 thinking time.
