David Atkins knows what time it is.

Right now there's a lot of understandable schadenfreude at leopards eating faces. These people voted for cruel policies and we are all having to pay the price. Millions of innocent people in the US and around the world are justifiably terrified.

But if we want to bring this regime down we're going to have to work together with the repentant. Once the scales fall from voters' eyes, it will no longer be the time for "I told you so." https://washingtonmonthly.com/2025/01/31/the-unpopularity-of-trumps-actions-is-staggering/

@MaryAustinBooks The things people are saying about "red state voters" are pretty appalling. On BlueSky someone wrote that the country would be better off if we all died from starvation and disease. I don't know if the Trump cultists in my life are ever going to snap out of it, but I voted as blue as I possibly could have. I have zero influence over the conservative majority in my state.

@Meowthias

I feel ya. I am from a red state also. The blue voters in red states are good people who deserve support. My friends back home are all blue voters now, whether they started that way or not. They are in a grim situation and do not deserve the blame. Plus, the plight of voter suppressed POC should not be ignored by anyone.

And even the MAGAs who change their minds should be welcomed for pragmatic reasons, not punished. Let's just get democracy back.

@Meowthias @MaryAustinBooks

I'm sure it actually sucks worse for blue voters in red states because you're surrounded by people who actually voted for him. Here a blue state at least I can reasonably imagine most people feel as I do.

That said, one person on BlueSky saying something hyperbolic about "red state voters", by which they probably meant people who actually voted for Trump, shouldn't, IMO, can safely be ignored.

I will say "I told you so" to some people though. Nicely, I will.

@VirginiaHolloway @MaryAustinBooks I see that sentiment a lot on BlueSky and I think it's emblematic of BlueSky's userbase. This kind of dehumanizing language erases vulnerable populations (such as religious minorities) in conservative parts of the United States and makes our lives much less safe.

I'm sorry to hear that. I don't interact much with BlueSky (I may have preemptively blocked it), but I have had a few personal experiences where I was reminded that, for example, not only is not everyone in Texas a Christian Nationalist, but for the rest of Texans those people are far worse than they are for me in my comfortable blue state armchair. Those of us with the privilege of not having our neighbors hate us for who we are should extend a hand, not scorn.

@MaryAustinBooks I think I may be missing some local context here, but I am all for working with people who are actually repentant.

It's a pity there's so few of them.

@sindarina There are few right now, but these dipshits in power are just getting started breaking things. More people will realize they've been sold a bill of goods.

My neighbor was just telling me he saw a white guy in the grocery store buying eggs at a high price and the guy said "Fucking Joe Biden." Maybe they can still tell themselves that now, but eventually all but the cultiest of the cult will see it's on Trump and the tech bro manbabies.

@MaryAustinBooks I might have believed you before COVID happened, but these days, after they showed they would not be dissuaded from the fucking nonsense even on their deathbeds?

Nah. They are riding this all the way down. Even if we manage to regain control of our democracies, that deep-seated resentment is still going to remain.

You cannot beat that false sense of nostalgia. Not until they decide they want to move on.

@sindarina Oh, I sure as heck didn't mean the hardest core cultists turning on Dear Leader! Yes, he remains an identity.

But as the article discusses, swing voters and soft Trumpers will turn on him.

And if he dies-- which can't be far off-- these spectacularly unlikable, uncharismatic suits are left holding the bag. And then I wouldn't want to be in their shoes, no matter how rich they are.

@MaryAustinBooks I suspect the group that turns on him is much smaller than you think it is, especially if one were to limit it to people who are actually repentant, willing to take responsibility for the choice they made.

They made that choice despite all the evidence that was out there, all the warnings given, using silly excuses like the price of eggs just so they wouldn't have to vote for a Black woman.

The folks who will turn on him because they were inconvenienced are just as likely to not vote the next time, and therefore quite useless.

It needs admission of guilt, of complicity, or there can be no repair.

@sindarina

I'm not talking about how many people become antiracist. I'm talking survival.

If you look at the Covid vaccine data, you see how few people are culty enough to sign up for job loss and/or a Darwin award.

The people not willing to die for Dear Leader include all active blue voters + all voter suppressed blue voters + all swing voters and soft MAGA.

And this time we're talking about food, not a novel vaccine that was hard for many to access.

@MaryAustinBooks Forget the Trump voters, focus on mobilising the people who didn't vote last time. Much bigger bang for your organising buck, I bet.

@sindarina

I wasn't necessarily talking about voting.

I certainly hope we still have elections, but Trump's stated goal was for his cult to "not have to vote any more." We have a dictator now and it may take a general strike or other massive direct action to dislodge this regime. I have more hope of angry former Trump voters doing something than I have for people who wouldn't get off the couch to stop concentration camps.

@MaryAustinBooks Fair.

I suspect he'll just throw them a bone or two to keep them quiet, though.
